Daniel Jones receives a vote of confidence from former teammate Saquon Barkley after the New York Giants released the former No. 6 overall on Friday. The move did not surprise many, as he fell down the pecking order just days before and even found himself practicing as a safety during training.

Meanwhile, reporters flocked around Barkley in Philadelphia to ask the Pro Bowl running back how he views Jones’ release. He refrained from revealing too much but mentioned being in contact with his friend.

The Giants never managed to get the best out of either of the two players. Since joining the Eagles in the offseason, Barkley is on course for a career year. After ten games, he leads the league with 1347 scrimmage yards and 10 rushing touchdowns, along with creating a Madden 25 move. The Eagles have a record of 8-2, while the Giants have a record of 2-8.

It sucks to see how everything went down out there. But I have nothing but great things to say about him [Daniel Jones]. You’re not gonna really find anybody that can really say any negative things about him, but it’s the NFL. Hopefully, wherever he ends up next, they’re going to get a guy who come in and work.

Giants owner John Mara broke the news on X. Mara wrote that Jones visited his office to ask if they would cut him from the team. Eventually, both parties agreed that it was the best option.

The 27-year-old now needs to clear his waivers, and if the Giants don’t re-sign him to the practice squad, then other NFL teams are free to add him after 4 p.m. on Monday, November 25. Saquon Barkley wished him good luck by highlighting it didn’t work out for him in New York, so Jones may experience something similar.

Jones had an injury guarantee in his contract, and the Giants benched him early so that he remained healthy during the cut; otherwise, they had to pay him the additional money.

Due to his $160 million contract, Jones earned around $81 million at the time of signing the deal, which will reach $105 million over the four-year stretch.

This means the Giants still owe Jones around $55 million, of which $22 million they had to pay in 2025, saving around $19 million for the following year. The Giants don’t need to pay him any penny on a March 16 release, but if they delay the process to post a June 1 release, then they pay him full money, which is more than unlikely.
