The Philadelphia Eagles started the season hot with four wins in a row. The Denver Broncos thwarted their perfect record in Week 5, while the New York Giants handed them their first back-to-back regular-season loss since the final week of 2023.
In the six games, the Philadelphia Eagles’ running game has not performed at their best. However, running back and defending Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley thinks that they are close to figuring out their running game. Though the fact that he has to still make the statement bothered him. He said after Thursday’s loss to the Giants:
To be honest, I’m tired of saying how close we are. I know everyone’s tired of saying how close we are. We just gotta go do it.
Saquon Barkley, who was part of the New York Giants before joining the Eagles last year, was returning to MetLife as a champion for the first time. However, his campaign this year doesn’t look anything like the past year; it’s quite dreary. He entered Week 6 averaging 3.2 yards per carry, much different than the 60-yard touchdowns he had ran and scored points last season.
In the game against his former team, Barkley was silent, running for just 58 yards. Barkley, who had more than 2000 rushing yards last season, had less than 60 yards for the fifth time this season. There were just two games in all of the twenty games last season when Barkley registered less than sixty yards. And the fact that it has happened five times is not good, especially in the long run.
The game didn’t start like that. Barkley made an instant impact in his first two handoffs, dashing for 18 yards in the first play of the season and adding 13 more in the next snap. In just two plays, he surpassed the meager 30 yards he rushed for against the Broncos last week. The first two handoffs didn’t match the vibe of the whole game. He was tackled at or behind the line of scrimmage more often than not.
The Eagles’ running game might be predictable, though Saquon Barkley disagrees
The Philadelphia Eagles’ running game has become predictable, or so the Madden 99 offensive tackle Lane Johnson thought. Johnson suggested that a bit of variety in their game plan can alter the end results and therefore bring out more offensive firepower. Johnson said:
We’re frustrated. It seems a lot harder than it needs to be. Maybe moving forward we have a bit more variety, hit the perimeter some, doing a little bit more than that.

However, Barkley did not agree or think that it was the case. He admitted that the last season, when opposing teams understood the Eagles’ offensive approach, yet still failed to contain it.

Lane Johnson says the Eagles offense has become too predictable. He says they have spurts where it works but then defenses figure out what they’re going to do. He said last year they did more RPO that made it harder… pic.twitter.com/9PKFEq7cQS
Barkley countered:
Last year, do you think we were predictable? Everybody knew we were going to run the ball. We still got it off. I think we also have got to get back to the attitude, the mindset of not really giving a (expletive) what people are trying to do.

Barkley added that he still believed that the Eagles had the best offensive line in the National Football League. He continued to admit that, despite the concerns, Kevin Patullo, as a first-time offensive coordinator, has done a great job. Additionally, he mentioned that the team needs to better and any differing opinion doesn’t hold up.
