Sauce Gardner dubbed one of the ‘most overrated players in the league’ by NFL executive

Some personnel evaluators even snubbed Sauce Gardner from their top 10 list.

The words ‘overrated’ and Sauce Gardner don’t sit well in one sentence, yet an NFL executive believes otherwise. The 23-year-old cornerback quickly established himself among the best players in the NFL, not to mention earned back-to-back Pro Bowl selections after being drafted by the New York Jets in 2022.

According to the annual Top 10 polls conducted by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Gardner is ranked as the third-best cornerback in the league. However, there remain some experts in the league who believe the Jets’ star cornerback does not deserve the amount of hype he gets, as an anonymous NFL executive claimed.

In addition to this, Fowler also added that there were some personnel evaluators who snubbed Gardner from their top 10 list. Nonetheless, Gardner may have been ranked even higher if he had won the hearts of all executives unanimously.

Last season, when the Jets’ whole offense collapsed, it was the defense that got the team through many games and finished the season at 7-10. And a big credit for that goes to CB Gardner who only allowed the opposing quarterbacks to log 366 yards and barely touchdowns while being targeted just 57 times.

Denver’s Pat Surtain II named best cornerback, followed by Denzel Ward

While the two-time Pro Bowler ranked third on the list of the top 10 best cornerbacks in the league, the Cleveland Browns’ Denzel Ward preceded him as second and Denver Broncos’ Patrick Surtain II as first.

The ranking does seem reasonable given the fact, that Ward played a crucial role in his team’s success in the playoffs twice in a row. Meanwhile, Gardner may have a Pro Bowler level of personal success, but his team is yet to end their playoff drought

As for Surtain II– the best cornerback in the NFL, is said to “play in any coverage” with his phenomenal skills, instincts, and size. He is considered one of the better players that the Broncos found in 2016– when Peyton Manning exited and the team began languishing along with a quarterback crisis.
