New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner was asked to talk about New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones after Wednesday’s joint practice. The exchange between Gardner and the reporters became awkward, to say the least.
Gardner told the reporters that Jones was a ‘good quarterback’. However, the answer seemed less than convincing to some of them, leading to a long pause. SNY posted a clip of the moment, which went viral.
In the video, the 23-year-old can be seen with an unconvincing smile on his face, finding it hard to continue the conversation.

Sauce Gardner clarified his awkward stance on Daniel Jones
Shortly after the video went viral, Sauce Gardner had no other alternative but to come clean. He posted a tweet on X (previously Twitter).
I said "he's a good quarterback." I just got a little distracted with something mid-interview chilllllllll.Sauce Gardner wrote.

Fortunately for the UC graduate, NBC Sports‘ Josh Alper transcribed the entire press interview that shed light on the matter. Gardner indeed praised Jones.
He's [Daniel Jones] a good quarterback, you feel me? I thought I was about to pick him off today... he had looked at the last minute to try to throw the check-down to Wan'Dale [Robinson]. I thought I had the pick, but he kept it.Sauce Gardner said.
Then came the long pause before he resumed. He revealed the training session was tough because both teams gave it their all.
The competitive period---it was very competitive. It was great. I had fun out there today. I don't really know what to say.Gardner added.
Jones’ teammate Malik Nabers had a similar opinion, as he found it hard to maneuver past Gardner or DJ Reed on the day.
It bothered me it bothered me pretty bad… They won the day.Nabers revealed.
As Gardner said, Jones was good on the day, throwing accurate passes, but Nabers dropped far too many because of the tight coverage. The development is encouraging and discouraging at the same time because the praise will do great for Jones, but on the other hand, this may put a dent in Nabers’ confidence. His first two pre-season games did not go as planned, catching just one pass for five yards in a loss against the Houston Texans.

– PBU by Echols on deep shot
– Ball thrown at Nabers’ feet (Reed coverage)
– Completion over middle, 15+ gain (Gardner coverage)
– Short over middle on PA roll out…
In the same game, Daniel Jones threw two interceptions, one of them being a pick-6 while trying to avoid a safety.
The Duke graduate has struggled massively this past couple of seasons with bad plays and injuries. The 2023 campaign came to a quick end after Jones tore his Achilles, but he is still the #1 choice for the Giants ahead of Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito.
Jones must deliver in the new season to justify his $40 million annual contract, which he signed in the 2023 offseason; otherwise, he will risk seeing himself getting cut from the team. He needs to find the form of the 2022 season when he led the Giants to the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
