2025 is a big year for Sauce Gardner. He must justify the New York Jets’ agreeing to give him a four-year, $120.4 million contract extension.

Gardner kicked off his fourth year with the Jets by traveling to Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. His previous and only visit took place when Robert Saleh was the head coach; now, Aaron Glenn holds that job.

On Saturday, the All-Pro corner discovered a cheesehead and carried it onto the sidelines at full-time. His playful antic was a nod to one of the most viral moments of his rookie year. Naturally, his stunt brought laughter and cheer from the crowd and players.

Glenn, on the other hand, wasn’t too keen on partaking in the fun. New York media’s Harrison Glaser tweeted that the Jets’ head coach ordered Gardner to take the cheesehead off and concentrate on the game.

Sauce Gardner wants to prove that he’s still one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL

After consecutive All-Pro campaigns to start his NFL career, many projected Gardner to have the same momentum in his third season as well. However, he took a nosedive. He was penalized 10 times, missed a career-worst 17.5% of his tackle attempts, and allowed 25 touchdowns.

A 49-tackle and 9-pass-deflection season did not even earn him a Pro Bowl nod. Pro Football Focus graded him 70.2 overall (46th best in the league).

Steve Wilks, the Jets’ new defensive coordinator, challenged Gardner to push his limits to the maximum.

When new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks met Gardner for the first time at the beginning of the offseason, he challenged the star cornerback to raise his game to a new level. Perhaps he noticed some slippage last season after a historic start to his career. Or maybe he was just pushing buttons, which coaches do even with their best players.

Gardner capped off his first preseason game of the 2025 campaign with one tackle and a tackle for loss from 12 snaps.

Sauce Gardner designed his play based a lot on Aaron Glenn

Glenn made a name for himself in Detroit, where he was the defensive coordinator of the Lions team that won consecutive NFC North titles and reached the conference championship game. He had a prior connection with the Jets from his playing days. So, it was a no-brainer for the Jets owners to appoint him as the new head coach.

Gardner, during a recent sit-down with Kay Adams, revealed that he studied Glenn and his style of football before he arrived in New York.

I did a lot of [film study] even before he got here. You know people would talk about [Ed] Reed, they will talk about [Lindon] Crow, and [Aaron] Glenn. I was like ‘I might need to do research.’ I already knew how much of a good coach he was in Detroit; he played corner here [at Jets]… Had to look at his highlights.

Sauce Gardner told Adams

Sauce Gardner has played 48 games for the Jets. In those games, he has recorded 181 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hits, 40 pass deflections, 3 interceptions, and one sack.
