The Delhi Premier League last year produced some very good cricketers who played an important part in this year’s IPL. One such cricketer is Digvesh Rathi who played for the Lucknow Super Giants. He was in the news right through the IPL for many cricketing and non-cricketing reasons. As the 2025 Delhi Premier League is underway, he once again has found himself in the headlines. The South Delhi Superstarz bowler was involved in a heated exchange in his recent match in the league.

The West Delhi Lions took on the South Delhi Superstarz in match number 7 and sparks blew in the second innings chase. Superstarz batted first and put up an impressive 185 on the board. However, their bowling lacked venom and matters got worse when Rathi came up to bowl against Lions’ opening batter Ankit Kumar in the 5th over.

Rathi was about to bowl before he bailed out last minute disrupting the batter’s rhythm. Kumar on the very next ball himself walked away as Rathi was about to bowl to settle the score between the two. There was certainly some heat right there between the two and it carried on for a few more overs.

When Rathi came back to bowl in the 12th over Kumar smacked him down the ground twice in consecutive balls. That not only made the run chase easier but also allowed Kumar to go ahead in his individual battle with the spinner.

To add further fuel to the fire, Kumar also signaled to Rathi that he had been hit for two sixes in two balls. Many have approved of Kumar’s actions against Rathi as the bowler was getting unpopular amongst fans with every celebration of his in the recently concluded IPL.

Kumar was the star of the show for the Lions as they comfortably chased down the total in just the 16th over, as he scored a match winning 96 off just 46 deliveries. He won the player of the match award for his breathtaking batting.

A Look Back at Digvesh Rathi’s IPL 2025 antics

Digvesh Rathi with a lot of mystery in his bowling was one of the key bowlers for the Lucknow Super Giants in this year’s IPL. However, with his wild celebrations he attracted a lot of unwanted attention from the IPL management and higher officials as well. Rathi made it a habit to do the famous notebook celebration after every wicket much to the annoyance of the dismissed batsmen.

He was also fined hefty amounts multiple times for his celebrations. Despite the fines, Rathi continued the celebrations and had the backing of his team management. He later started getting away from the batter and writing his celebratory notes on the ground. This was not objected by the umpires and after a point the fines stopped.

A very famous incident was when Rathi got into the way of Abhishek Sharma, the batter he had just dismissed while celebrating. Sharma’s reaction to this celebration was an aggressive one as he turned and stormed back to say a few words to the spinner.

This altercation led to the spinner getting a one match suspension and a fine of 50% of his match fees. He then had to miss his next match against the Gujarat Titans owing to the suspension, facing a lot of backlashes on social media for the entire incident.

However, that didn’t stop Rathi from getting into the headlines as in the famous RCB 230+ run chase he was involved in another crucial moment. He dismissed RCB batter Jitesh Sharma at an important juncture and went on to write celebratory notes. As luck would have it, Rathi had overstepped. That gave Sharma a major reprieve and he was instrumental in getting RCB over the line to secure the top qualification spot.

Apart from all the controversial moments on the field, Rathi was a key bowler for his captain Rishabh Pant. In 13 matches he took 14 wickets, at an impressive economy rate of 8.32. He would love to replicate a season like this for his side yet again in the next season.
