With the conclusion of the NFL Draft, the 2024 season is set to welcome many rookies. And there couldn’t be a better time to offer advice to them, so that’s what former NFL defensive end Carl Nassib did.
On Friday night, Nassib stepped near the podium to announce the No. 85 pick drafted by his former team, the Cleveland Browns. However, prior to that, the former DE chose to offer some much-needed advice to the young football players beginning their NFL journey.
Given that the most crucial thing for them to keep in mind is managing their finances, that’s what Nassib decided to talk about.
I saw a lot of diamonds last night. To all you draft picks at home, save your money. It's not about how much you make, it's about how much you keep, alright? Remember that.Said the former Browns star DE
The advice is coming from the player who had a relatively short NFL career, where he earned $23 million in seven years. His current net worth is $10 million, which simply means he is pretty good at managing his finances.
There is no doubt that Nassib’s advice was content and much-needed for the incoming rookies. There isn’t a shortage of stories where players retired from the NFL with mere pennies in their pockets despite making millions of dollars playing in the National Football League.
How Carl Nassib breaking barriers and changing professional sport
Apart from his money-management skills, there’s another major reason for the prominence of the former NFL defensive end. He made history, but not by recording stats—for being the first-ever openly gay player to play in a regular-season game.
The news about his sexuality came out in public in 2021, when he was playing for the Las Vegas Raiders and later played a season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nassib retired with an impressive 25 ½ sacks and was the first player to represent the LGBTQ+ community in a professional sport.
The retired DE not only paved the way for other players to be true to themselves but also instigated important discussions on diversity, inclusion, and representation in the world of sports.
