It was heartbreak for The Tartan Army as Scotland crashed out of the UEFA Euro group stages following a last-minute defeat to Hungary. The Scots were up against Hungary in a fiery battle for qualification from Group A as Germany and Switzerland booked their seats for the Round of 16. A horrific injury followed by a penalty shout and a late goal gave rise to one of the most exciting clashes in the group.
That being said, Scotland did enjoy their fair share of chances over the 90 minutes. In fact, the entire crowd was convinced that Scotland were deserving of a penalty when Stuart Armstrong was brought down in the penalty area. The forward was brought down inside the penalty area, with replays showing a clear foul from Willi Orban in the process.
Though half a dozen Scottish players swarmed the match official, the referee remained unmoved. Following the game, Scotland coach Steve Clarke was furious at the match official.
It was 100% a penalty. I have other words but I'm not going to use them. What's the purpose of VAR if they're not going to come in on something like that? It might have been better to use a European referee.Steve Clarke said in the post-match interview
Germany who had already qualified, were joined by Switzerland from Group A in the Round of 16. The Round of 16 is set to start on the 29th of June.
Scotland fail to qualify from Group A as Hungary hang on ‘by a thread’
Dominik Szoboszlai and co. picked up their most important result at the 2024 Euros on Sunday night against Scotland. The men in white had a must-win game in front of them and with a good stroke of luck, came home with all three points. Despite incessant efforts from either side to take the lead, both Peter Gulacsi and Angus Gunn stood firm between the sticks to deny either side a scoring opportunity.
Several shots were cleared off from the line while others hit the post and went back in for either side. In the end, it proved to be a heartbreaking affair for the Scots as Hungary substitute Kevin Csoboth put the dagger in the opposition’s heart. A late counter attack culminated in a goal for Hungary as they finished third in Group A with three points from 3 games.
Despite the late winner, fans were concerned for Hungarian striker Barnabas Varga. The forward required immediate medical attention after a horrific collision inside his own penalty area. Eventually, the player was stretchered off the pitch and attended to outside the field. As of now, the player is stable and receiving treatment even though he suffered facial fractures during the collision.
