A surprising new candidate for Juan Soto‘s free agency race has emerged. According to the latest reports, the Tampa Bay Rays are interested in checking on the million-dollar agent, although their participation is questionable.
While they lack a roof on top of their heads, investing millions for Soto may seem unreal, especially given the top three teams in the race. Soto’s agent Scott Boras stated the new “whisper number” is $600 million, while it is expected to reach $700 million in free agency.
Juan Soto is not only looking for a team that has the mettle for a Championship run but also someone who can provide the dollars too. While many have compared Soto to surpass Los Angeles Dodgers Shohei Ohtani, Scott Boras has a different opinion.
He believes both are in different leagues to start a comparison. Furthermore, Soto is three years younger than Ohtani who signed a 10-year $700 million contract with LA. He believes Soto will have 15 solid years to give any team their worth of money.
I don’t think Ohtani has much to do with Juan Soto, at all. It’s not something we discuss or consider. Juan Soto is – he’s in an age category that separates him from all.

"Playing in New York for Juan was really, really comfortable. He really, really enjoyed his teammates, the Yankee experience. Juan loves winning."

He further called Juan Soto “the Mona Lisa of the museum” in the free agency. Boras is further impressed that Soto got to experience the World Series Championship atmosphere, unlike Alex Rodriguez.
He added that Soto has learned more than A-Rod after knowing “championship moments” and recording an overall stellar career in 2024. He feels Rodriguez didn’t have a resume like Soto at his age to play in championship games in big cities and with big teams.
I mean, other than the Dodgers and Astros’ players, Juan has got the most bats in the postseason. So, he’s been seen and understood much more than A-Rod was when he was a young player…It’s like every box is checked, where with A-Rod, he didn’t quite have the resume of championship play, big-city play, all of those things that Juan has.

The seven teams that have emerged so far in the Juan Soto free agency race are – the NY Yankees, NY Mets, LA Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, SF Giants, and Tampa Bay Rays. Many believe Soto may join across-city Mets as owner Steve Cohen is known for going deep in free agency.
Juan Soto interested in speaking with each prospective teams before signing
Right after the World Series, Juan Soto mentioned how he is open to receiving offers from all 30 MLB teams, and not just the NY Yankees. The same sentiment was echoed as Scott Boras said Soto would go through a “thorough process” before putting pen to paper.

Soto is interested in listening and speaking with each prospective team and deciding on his future course. Coming off a young age with an outstanding resume, he’ll undoubtedly look for a long-term deal.

Soto wants to sign with a team that will support an opportunity to win annually. If Soto signs with the Mets, Dodgers, or Boston, it will undoubtedly hurt the Yankees. For now, they have offered $21.05 million for 2025, but it is unsure whether Soto will agree to the deal or look for a long-term commitment.
