AEW has been competing with WWE as its rival since its inception. The co-owner of AEW, Tony Khan, has always prioritized wrestling over storylines. Although the matches presented by the wrestlers have been excellent, there is very little storyline to explore. Recently, WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner shared his honest thoughts about the Jacksonville-based company.
While speaking with Bill Apter on the WrestleBinge podcast, Scott Steiner was asked whether he followed any wrestling promotions. He stated that the competition AEW is providing WWE has been beneficial for the wrestling business. However, he admitted that the Stamford-based company had the most fan interest and was the most important.
Moreover, Steiner noted one major issue with AEW that they focused too much just on wrestling. The Hall of Famer stated that fans wouldn’t care if they delivered just great matches with no storyline. He said that would not work and the Jacksonville-based company was indeed struggling with that.
But there’s no doubt that WWE is hot right now. They got the fan interest. That’s what’s most important. The thing is, you just can’t have matches. Nobody gives a sh*t if they’re just matches with no storyline. You’re throwing two guys together…No, [it doesn’t work.]”Scott Steiner via the WrestleBinge podcast
At the AEW Double or Nothing PPV, twelve matches were contested, which is a lot compared to WWE’s average of five matches at a PLE. Not just him, many fans have also complained about AEW’s PPV events being too long. Nonetheless, both companies striving to be the best is a win for wrestling in general.
