Scottie Scheffler is once again the PGA Tour Player of the Year. The World No.1 continued his dominance on the greens this year and claimed his 4th successive Player of the Year award. This victory of his however, left some fans divided on social media.

Following a “freak” accident during Christmas last year, Scheffler missed the first month of the year through injury. After a slow start to the year, the American picked up his first victory at the CJ Cup Bryon Nelson, an event where he made his PGA Tour debut in 2014.

Two weeks later, Scheffler hoisted another trophy. Despite some early struggles, he eased through the PGA Championship and claimed his 3rd major title with a 5-shot victory.

Another win at the Memorial Tournament was followed by another major championship triumph. At the 153rd Open Championship, he fired scores of 68, 64 and 67 in the opening three rounds to take control of the tournament.

A final round score of 3-under 68 saw him finish the event 17-under par and clinch his 4th career major championship and complete three legs of the career grand slam.

Scheffler then picked up his 5th and 6th wins of the year at the BMW Championship and the Procore Championship, respectively.

On Monday, the PGA Tour would announce him as the Player of the Year again. This marked his 4th successive win, joining Tiger Woods as the only golfer to claim this honor 4 or more consecutive times.

Scheffler finished the year with 6 wins and 1 runner-up finish from 20 events. The only major setback he had this year was in a team event at the Ryder Cup.

In the showdown against Team Europe, he struggled a bit. He went 1-4-0 in his 5 matches and lost both sessions on Friday and Saturday. His sole victory did come against McIlroy, the one he beat to this award, during the singles session on Sunday. Despite a strong fightback on Sunday, Scheffler and his team lost the Ryder Cup once again.

The year 2025 turned out to be one of the best for McIlroy. The Northern Irish golfer started the year with a bang and won in his first start of the season as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

He then won The Players Championship for a 2nd time in his career, following a playoff victory against J.J. Spaun at the TPC Sawgrass. It was in April when he clinched the biggest win of his career.

After a slow start, the former World No.1 started climbing up the leaderboard at the Masters Tournament. Following an intense final round, the golfer finally clinched the green jacket after a playoff win against Justin Rose. He thus completed the career grand slam and became the 6th player in history to win all 4 major championships.

While McIlroy’s form did dip a bit after the Masters Tournament triumph, he roared back to form at the Irish Open. The golfer won his National Open with another dramatic playoff win.

He then played an instrumental part in his team’s triumph at the Ryder Cup. Despite facing the heat from a highly vocal US crowd, the golfer kept his cool and picked up 3.5 points from his 5 matches. McIlroy wrapped up the year with his 7th Race to Dubai title, surpassing his idol Seve Ballesteros record.

Of the 16 events on the PGA Tour, McIlroy won 3 times and had 1 runner-up finish. He even missed a cut at the RBC Canadian Open, something that Scheffler did not. The top-ranked golfer in the world made the cut in all 20 events he played this year on the tour.

In the end, it came down to the voting of their peers. While McIlroy had an incredible year, Scheffler did pick up 2 major wins. No matter who won in the end, one of them had to face disappointment.
