World No.1 Scottie Scheffler shot a score of 67 in the second round of the Genesis Invitational to go second on the leaderboard. At that stage, it looked like he was back in contention. However, the third round on Saturday proved to be a brutal one for him.
The 28-year-old golfer had a season for the ages in 2024 as he claimed 9 victories. His wins included a major championship in the Masters Tournament and an Olympic Gold medal. All of this saw him being named the 2024 PGA Tour Player of the Year.
After a birdie on the 5th hole, Scheffler made a bogey on the 6th and 9th hole to finish the front nine 1-over. A double bogey on the 14th hole and another bogey on the 16th hole, saw his train go off the tracks a little bit.
Scheffler ended the day with a score of 4-over 76. This saw him fall down from second to T8th as his score went from 7-under to 3-under for the tournament.
This turned out to be his worst score on the tour since 2022. During the final round of the Players Championship that year, he shot 76 in round four to finish T55th for the event.
On Sunday he will now start the round, 5 shots behind leader Patrick Rogers. He will be paired with Rory McIlroy, who himself shot a score of 2-over to fall four places behind on the leaderboard.
🚨🫢⛳️ #UPDATE: With a round of +4, 76, Scottie Scheffler records his worst score since the final round of the 2022 PLAYERS. He’ll be paired with Rory McIlroy on Sunday and both guys will start the day 5 back of the lead. @SchefflerFans pic.twitter.com/I6UtPRhpdP

Despite how Torrey doesn't excite the architect fanboys in golf, it has a way to humble the best players.

I beat Scotty today. On the same course? No. Under the same conditions? No. Legitimately? Not really.

@PGATOUR I said it at pebble, reinforcing it on Sunday at Phoenix, and clearly shows today that Scottie needed more time off. All the pieces are not there, between the ears. Something is up…

Last week, Scheffler was also seen losing his cool at the course. After a tee shot at the WM Phoenix Open, the golfer would chop down his bag in frustration following his recent showings. However, if there is anyone who can turn around 5 shot deficit in golf at the moment, then it is Scheffler. It will be interesting to see how he does in the final round.
