Scottie Scheffler is back in the winners’ circle. Taking part in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson event in his hometown of Texas, the World No.1 ran away with the title with another dominating performance. After the win, he was left emotional and almost teared up while recounting his earlier days.

The 28-year-old made his PGA Tour debut in 2014 in this event as a high school senior. Last year after winning the Masters Tournament and the RBC Heritage, Scheffler missed this event due to the birth of his first child – Bennett.

This whole week, Scheffler remained on top and went wire-to-wire. His first win of the 2025 season was a record-breaking one as he tied for the lowest 72-hole score.

He finished with a score of 31-under 253, 8 shots ahead of runner-up Erik van Rooyen, who finished 23-under. His score of 253 is the lowest on the PGA Tour across 4 rounds.

Justin Thomas and Ludvig Aberg have also shot a score of 253 across four rounds. However, those have been on a par-70 hole track. Scheffler could have held the record had he made an even-par score on the final two holes. He made a bogey and par on the 17th and 18th, respectively.

Following the win, Scheffler was left emotional in the interview with Amanda Balionis of CBS Sports. During the interview, the golfer almost choked up while recalling his debut 11 years ago in 2014.

This tournament means a lot to me. My first start as a pro, 11 years ago. I had my sister caddy for me, she’s back there too. So, you know, it’s a, I mean, it feels like a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice for little moments like these and they’re pretty special.

The CJ CUP Byron Nelson had a purse prize of $9.9 million, significantly lower than what some major championships and tour’s other signature events offer. Despite this, Scheffler bagged a pay cheque of over $1 million.

He walked away with $1,782,000 from this $9.9 million purse. Meanwhile, runner-up Erik van Rooyen also received over $1 million for his performance, as he got $1,079,100.

As for his total career earnings from the PGA Tour, Scheffler has made over $78 million. Only multi-time major champions Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, and Tiger Woods have made more money on the tour than Scheffler.

Jordan Spieth reacts to Scottie Scheffler’s win at CJ Cup Byron Nelson

During this past weekend, Scottie Scheffler was not the only Texas native who was playing in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Former World No.1 Jordan Spieth was also in action. Following Scheffler’s win, the 3-time major champion admitted that he (Scheffler) is ‘definitely’ better than him at the moment.

When Scheffler made his debut in this tournament in 2014, Spieth had already made his debut and was making waves across the tour. Since then, there had been comparisons between him and Scheffler.

After finishing 4th with a score of 19-under, 12 shots behind Scheffler, Spieth expressed that he hates admitting somebody is better than him. He, though, did praise him for his performance throughout the tournament.

What he’s doing is very inspiring, what he’s been doing is inspiring given it wasn’t that long ago I was definitely better than him, and now I’m definitely not right now and I hate admitting that about anybody. It’s very inspiring… I’m not like jealous of him winning this event over any other, I’m jealous of anyone that wins any week.

Jordan Spieth told the reporters in the press conference

Up next on the tour is the Truist Championship. After that event, Spieth and Scheffler will gear up to battle in the second major of the year, the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.
