Scottie Scheffler made some deep, candid remarks on Tuesday. Ahead of the 153rd Open Championship at the Royal Portrush, the World No.1 expressed that golf was “not the most important thing” in his life and claimed that he would quit the sport if it affected his family.
The 29-year-old welcomed his first child, Bennett, last year. On several occasions, his wife, Meredith, has been seen at the course with their son.
During the Open Championship presser, Scheffler was asked what was the longest he celebrated and which loss affected him the most. He would go on to give a deep answer regarding this before being asked what he found fulfilling while being a professional golfer. During this, he mentioned that he could give up the sport if it interfered his personal life.
I love playing golf. I love being able to compete. I love living out my dreams. I love being a father. I love being able to take care of my son. I love being able to provide for my family out here playing golf… but if my golf ever started affecting my home life or it ever affected the relationship I have with my wife or my son, that’s going to be the last day that I play out here for a living. This is not the be all, end all. This is not the most important thing in my life.

Scheffler later added that he would rather be a “great father” than a great golfer. Earlier in the interview, the 3-time major champion also expressed that he sometimes does not understand the point of living his dream and playing professional golf.
The American golfer is once again having a strong season this year. Following a delayed start to the campaign due to an injury, he has won 3 times this season, which includes him winning the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.
In the 15 events he has started this year, Scheffler has made the cut in every one of them. He has 12 top-10 finishes and is once again top of the FedEx Cup standings.
Scottie Scheffler comments on LIV Golf reapplying for OWGR points
Last week, it was reported that LIV Golf had reapplied for the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) points. During the press conference of the Open Championship, Scottie Scheffler, who ranks No.1 in the world, would comment on this matter.

LIV Golf does not receive the OWGR points. As a result of this, the world rankings of their golfers takes a massive hit.
The OWGR rankings are crucial for qualification in the major championships. Several LIV Golfers have been forced to sit out of the major events due to their world rankings falling as a result of them not receiving them.
LIV Golf had previously applied for these ranking points under the leadership of Greg Norman. However, their request for this was rejected in October 2023.
While speaking regarding the league reapplying for them, Scheffler seemingly supported this and expressed that it was important to have the ability to rank all the golfers. He also mentioned that it would be ‘better‘ if the best players in the world played more regularly against each other. At the moment, the only time LIV Golfers go up against the big names of the PGA Tour is during the 4 major championships.
I think having the ability to rank all the golfers in the world is really important. When you have guys always playing a different schedule, it can be very hard to rank player versus player… In terms of the world ranking points, I think the more often we can get the best players in the world playing together would be better, and that would only be better for the rankings as well.
Former World No.1 Jon Rahm also spoke on this matter recently. Following a runner-up finish at the LIV Golf Andalucia, the Spanish golfer expressed that his league does have a “high enough level of competition” to earn those rankings points.

Rahm will be one of the 18 LIV Golfers who will take part in the Open Championship this year. He and his league mates would be hoping for some positive news regarding the OWGR, as reports suggest that a committee meeting will take place this week during the final major event of the year.
