“Scrutiny is done by those who do not understand the game” – Umpire Nitin Menon says Indian umpires are good as any in the world

The umpiring standards in the recently concluded test series between India and England were praised a great deal for their top notch accuracy. Seldom were there decisions that had to be reversed upon reviews. Umpires Nitin Menon, Anil Chaudhary and Virender Sharma were the ones who were responsible for the same. Their competence was displayed best by a stat that stated that the series was the second best umpired series in terms of accuracy in decisions since 2017.
Although there were some dodgy third umpiring decisions that the English players were unhappy with, the overall umpiring standards was among the best that has ever been seen in a home series in India where the pitches were turning making it difficult to judge LBW decisions. Among the three umpires, Nitin Menon was the one who was the best with his accuracy. The ICC Elite Panel umpire addressed reporters today and spoke about the scrutiny surrounding Indian umpires.
Nitin Menon speaks following terrific test series
Nitin Menon spoke to ANI and said, “Well obviously, you feel happy when your performances get noticed. But, we do not get carried away because there are a lot of matches left. Honestly, yes, not only me, but Anil Chaudhary and Virender Sharma also did a very good job. So, everyone is feeling very happy and proud. See, all this scrutiny of Indian umpires is done by people who do not understand the game of cricket. We generally do not bother about this criticism when we are on the field of play. We know honestly that we are as good as other umpires in the world, so we do not really bother about the criticism of the Indian umpires.”
Nitin then spoke about the Umpire’s Call rule which has been the subject of criticism lately. He said, “See, first of all, Umpire’s Call means regarding decisions which are very close, the decisions which are 50-50 which can go either way, goes with the call of the onfield umpire. It is not a completely perfect decision that has been overturned, so it is a 50-50 decision which can go either way, to the batting side or the fielding side. When we know that technology is not itself 100 per cent correct, so that is when you need the Umpire’s Call.”
Nitin Menon would want to continue his excellent umpiring work in future series and the upcoming Indian Premier League as well.
