The Houston Texans denied the Buffalo Bills a chance to win in Houston for the first time since 2006 as they once again reigned supreme with a defensive extravaganza. The Texans, led by the defense in regular starter QB CJ Stroud’s absence, defeated the Bills 23-19 at the NRG Stadium in Houston on Thursday.

The Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who scripted records in last week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with six total touchdowns, couldn’t spin the same spell in Houston. The Allen antics were limited, much thanks to the defense, which landed twelve hits and completed eight sacks on the quarterback.

The Texans’ defense now holds the record for most sacks on Allen in a single game, surpassing the seven sacks the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers defenses inflicted on the reigning MVP in 2020 and 2018, respectively. Allen has just four games with more than five sacks. As one would easily point out, how would a quarterback function if the defense repeatedly sacks him?

And the Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott knows that as much as the next person. He’s aware that Allen can’t lead the team when there’s a hole in the wall that helps him throw and keeps him safe from injuries, as well as early hits that would tire out the signal-caller towards the end.

They had 12 hits on Josh, eight sacks. That’s not a healthy formula right there. It’s not a healthy way to play or a healthy way to keep our quarterback healthy through the remainder of the season.

Sean McDermott said in his post game press conference

True, a winning formula doesn’t involve the quarterback being pushed to the brink to pass and win even when he’s under heavy pressure. If the Bills are to become a winning team, they need a shift in their formula and a better understanding of the margins of error. McDermott claimed that a prominent area they need to work on is avoiding the obvious passing situations that let the quarterback open for the defenses to tee off.

That’s where the hits come, second down and long turns into third down and long, and that’s the unhealthy formula I’m talking about, and Josh takes too many hits. So we’ve got to figure that piece out.

Josh Allen vows to be better after the disappointing game

The loss at the hands of the Houston Texans was more than an offensive failure; it pushed them from a comfortable spot to a vulnerable position in the playoff spots. A win would have solidified their standing, but the loss has swept them off that altogther.

Josh Allen, frustrated with their performance, threw his helmet on the ground during the game. He later opened up about what it meant to be sacked so much. Allen admitted that it wasn’t fun and that he realized that there were a few where he played a hand in his sacking.

It’s not fun. I ran into a couple myself. I have to be better with throwing the ball away, living to see another down, letting us play some situational football and pinning them deep. Too many times, I was going backwards, and I have to be better on that.

Josh Allen said after the game

With their playoff hopes becoming vulnerable game by game, any hits to Josh Allen can change the direction of the Bills’ Super Bowl dreams. The team wants Allen to be injury-free. An eerie incident in the first quarter scared the Bills a bit.

With a little over three minutes left in the first quarter, the 29-year-old injured his shoulder after being taken down awkwardly by Will Anderson Jr. The Bills’ OL Dion Dawkins said it was a tough sight for the team. After the game, Allen said his shoulder briefly went numb but insisted it wasn’t serious. Though he had a tingly feeling, he didn’t miss any snaps of the game.
