Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford turned 37 in February and shows no signs of retiring from football just yet. His head coach, Sean McVay, wants the two-time Pro Bowler to continue being the Rams QB as long as possible.

As long as Stafford is part of the Rams, the NFC West team will always remain in the mix for a Super Bowl. Despite going through changes since their triumph in 2021, the Rams have pushed other teams to the limit each year ever since.

We have a chance with him every time he’s at the switch, and love working with him. And I think he can play as long as he wants, but fortunately, I’m hoping it’s a couple more years.

Sean McVay said during an exclusive interview with Adam Schein on SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio.

The Rams were in top form last season. Despite the star pass rusher Aaron Donald’s retirement and wide receiver Puka Nacua only playing eleven games in the regular season, Stafford led the Rams to a divisional playoff game.

After seeing off the Minnesota Vikings in the wild card, Stafford and the Rams gave eventual Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles, a run for their money. Rookie Jared Verse made life hell for Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, sacking him twice. Verse was chosen as the Defensive Rookie of the Year by the NFL.

Stafford found himself in muddy waters in the offseason. The Rams were reportedly ready to listen to trade offers. In the end, they discarded that idea and restructured the former first overall pick’s contract. But there was still chatter about whether the Rams would add another QB to the room.

During the NFL Annual Meeting, reporters asked general manager Les Snead whether the Rams would draft Stafford’s protege. Sneed agreed that at some point, they have to think about the future.

We’re very well aware that there is a life after Matthew coming at some point. When that is — it could be two, three years from now, so it’s not urgent for us.

ESPN’s Mina Kimes urged the Rams were one of the sleeper teams to select a quarterback—not in the first round but later on. Kimes argued that the Rams should draft a QB now and let him sit behind Stafford for a couple of years to learn McVay’s playbook.

Her choice was ex-Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart.

I really think the best fit for (Dart) is anywhere where he can sit for a year. He has a lot to learn, [including] decision-making and feel for pressure. So, I would love for him, Dart, to end up with a team like the Rams where he can sit for a year because I do think it would help him a great deal.

Mina Kimes said on NFL Live (H/T: Sports Illustrated)

Dart went to the New York Giants after they traded just one spot ahead of the Rams, the 26th overall pick. However, the Rams gave up that pick. They traded down to the second round, 46th overall, and drafted Oregon’s tight end Terrance Ferguson.

The Rams didn’t draft a quarterback, unlike the Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns, who drafted two each.

McVay has faith in Stafford to carry the Rams once again. In the meantime, they extended backup Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract for another year. He played just one game in 2024. They also have former fourth-round draft pick Stetson Bennett waiting for an opportunity.
