In Short
  • Sean McVay is openly recruiting Kirk Cousins for a potential reunion with the Rams.
  • McVay acknowledges the need for a reliable backup as Matthew Stafford ages and faces injury risks.
  • The Rams are exploring quarterback options for the future, including potential draft picks.

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has become a magnet for success ever since he took the job. That is why every year he tries to continue battling it out in a league where winning is harder than people imagine.

He was touted as the offensive genius who could find creative ways to usurp opposing defenses. But if the league has taught anything, others will find a way to counter those moves.

The totality of all the schemes is what ends up deciding a game, and that is why McVay keeps creating new plays. But to execute that, he also needs a quarterback in whom he can trust.

Matthew Stafford has been doing that well enough, with his regular-season MVP, and the Vince Lombardi Trophy sitting in the Rams’ facilities, proof that the QB-head coach combination can win.

Even then, for someone as competitive as the 40-year-old offensive wizard, he knows his quarterback is aging and could struggle with injuries. That is why he needs a capable backup to continue being better than to stop at the NFC Championship Game as they did last season.

Kirk and I experienced a lot of first things together. There was a real foundational relationship… I’m forever indebted to him… Kirk was awesome… Kirk, come see us, man. We would love to have you.

Sean McVay said on NFL Live

This was the former Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator, openly letting his former QB, Kirk Cousins, know that the doors to the Los Angeles Rams’ facilities are open if he wants to talk about signing a contract for next season.

Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford are talking about the latter’s replacement

Even if Kirk Cousins signs, he would still be a 37-year-old coming off a down year. Therefore, even Sean McVay knows that he cannot rely on his former Commanders QB to be the answer in the long run.

With starting signal-caller Matthew Stafford also trending towards retirement, the franchise has to think about their future at the position. They do have Stetson Bennett as a backup, but as per the head coach, they are looking at other options.

Matthew and I talk all the time… We want to think both short and long term.

Sean McVay said on Up & Adams

The Rams head coach made it clear that he admires everything Stafford does, but also knows that his playmaker has earned the right to decide how long he wants to play.

That is why they have had conversations about bringing in his replacement sometime down the line. It is not certain whether they are referring to Bennett or another prospect in this draft.

Either way, neither would Kirk Cousins be a long-term solution if he signed, nor would they expect Matthew Stafford to continue playing for a few more years.

Sean McVay subtly dismissed speculation of Ty Simpson becoming a Ram

While continuing on the subject of their future quarterback on Up & Adams, host Kay Adams asked Sean McVay if he had an opinion about Ty Simpson.

We watch all of our guys. I like him a lot, too… I probably haven’t done as much work on him as you have… I think (Fernando) Mendoza was a fun watch, too. But there’s a lot of other guys that I like at that 13th pick. Whether it’s QBs or whether it’s guys on offense or defense. We are going to get a good player at 13.

Sean McVay replied

The 2017 Coach of the Year initially toed the line Adams led with, and subtly praised Simpson. But at the same time, shifted to praise Fernando Mendoza, while finishing off to suggest he and his front office are looking at other players.

Since the Indiana Hoosiers QB will be long gone by then, it is safe to assume that the Rams are not going to Ty Simpson despite all the attempts to hype him up.
