Sean McVay, Super Bowl-winning head coach of the Los Angeles Rams showered praise on the Chicago Bears’ first interim head coach in history Thomas Brown. Brown, who joined the Bears in 2024 as the passing game coordinator quickly became the offensive coordinator before stepping up to be the new head coach in the wake of Matt Eberflus’ firing.

McVay and Brown go a long way back as the latter worked as the assistant to McVay in the Los Angeles Rams, serving the team from 2021 to 2023. McVay and Brown also have some history in their teenage years when they played against each other in high school. Although McVay was born in Dayton, Ohio, he attended Marist High School, Brookhaven graduating in 2004. Brown, on the other hand, played for Tucker High School located around 7 miles away from Brookhaven.

McVay heaped a glowing recommendation on Brown whom he described as a great competitor via Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic. On the same note, McVay also admitted that he always felt like Brown would transform into a head coach at some point, adding that he believes the management would be impressed by his abilities.

He has always been a guy that has had incredible command. He’s been a great competitor. He kind of demands respect from people he’s around just by the way that he carries himself. And I think he’s going to do a great job… There are certain people, when you watch (them) you’re like, ‘man, they’re a little different’ in terms of the competitiveness, the spirit, the never-say-die attitude… And then just his overall presence in general is impressive. I think you guys will be impressed… and I’m happy for him for the opportunity.

McVay did add that it is disappointing that the situations are challenging and unfavorable. The new Bears coach does have a daunting task if they are planning to stage some sort of revival. The Bears lost their sixth game in a row when playing against the Detroit Lions in Week 13, no thanks to a bizarre last-minute mess up in clock management.

Thomas Brown needs the wins to stay as the Chicago Bears head coach beyond this season

Twelve interim head coaches have been appointed to permanent positions since 2000. Among them, Leslie Frazier (Minnesota Vikings), Jason Garrett (Dallas Cowboys), and Doug Marrone (Jacksonville Jaguars) are the only ones to have completed at least three full seasons with the teams that promoted them.

Interim head coaches striking gold is rarely seen. The latest interim head coach to make it full-time was Antonio Pierce, whose Las Vegas Raiders is 2-10 to the season. The New York Jets’ Robert Saleh replacement Jeff Ulbrich is also not seeing a pretty picture either. However, the New Orleans Saints have rerouted under Darren Rizzi winning two of two games. It won’t be an easy task for Thomas Brown to ensure his position for the upcoming year.

According to Jerry Fowler, Brown will have a full look when the Bears start their hunt for the new man in charge. The core goal of the Bears would be the development of rookie and draft pick No.1 Caleb Williams into a potential star signal-caller for the future years. In the past weeks since stepping up as OC, Brown has revitalized the Chicago Bears’ offense as well as Williams.
