Henry Cejudo has been a prominent figure in mixed martial arts for over a decade, known for his fast-paced career and multiple championship runs. Over the years, he has made several announcements regarding retirement, creating a recurring narrative in the sport about his potential exits. Former bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley recently did not hold back on Cejudo’s latest retirement.

Cejudo had an illustrious career during his prime when he became a double champ in the flyweight and bantamweight divisions. ‘Triple C’ first retired on his own terms when he TKOed UFC legend Dominick Cruz to complete his final title defense. The second retirement came in 2025 when Cejudo was on a three-fight skid after losing to Aljamain Sterling, Merab Dvalishvili, and Song Yadong.

However, it was recently announced that Cejudo would be making a return to the Octagon after his last appearance in February 2025. The former double champion is set to finally retire against bantamweight prospect Payton Talbott at UFC 323 in December 2025. O’Malley recently joked about Cejudo’s latest retirement announcement during an interview with popular MMA analyst and influencer The MMA Guru.

Henry said he’s gonna retire for the 16th time after this fight. Personally, I think he’s damn near bankrupt, and he is like, “**** UFC, give me a fight!”

This was not the first time that O’Malley had made a joke about Cejudo’s financial situation. ‘Suga’ believed that Cejudo only came back from retirement at UFC 298 to face Dvalishvili as he had no money left. The former double champion was completely dominated by Dvalishvili, who threw him around the Octagon and earned a dominant unanimous decision victory.

Cejudo’s multiple retirement U-turns were also noticed by UFC CEO Dana White. While he is undoubtedly one of the best UFC fighters from the lighter weight divisions, White denied Cejudo’s post-fight interview at UFC 298, wanting the spotlight to be on Dvalishvili. Former rival and UFC legend Demetrious Johnson also urged ‘Triple C’ to retire after his performance at UFC Seattle in February 2025.

Overall, the ongoing discourse surrounding Henry Cejudo’s retirements has kept other fighters, including Sean O’Malley, closely connected to the evolving division hierarchy. O’Malley’s positioning within the bantamweight division is directly affected by these developments, with Cejudo’s retirements influencing matchmaking decisions and promotional focus.

Following his recent controversial win against Chito Vera at UFC Vancouver, Aiemann Zahabi publicly expressed interest in a potential matchup with O’Malley. The interaction gained attention after O’Malley reacted to Zahabi’s video in a humorous and seemingly confused manner, which prompted Zahabi to respond that the fight could be organized.

That’s good. It seems like we are setting it up. If he didn’t want it, he would not have made a video.

A potential fight between O’Malley and Zahabi carries significant stakes for both fighters and the bantamweight division. For Sean O’Malley, it represents an opportunity to get back in the win column after his last two fights ended in defeat. At the same time, Zahabi would gain a chance to make a name for himself against one of the division’s biggest stars.
