Sean O’Malley was once among the UFC’s biggest stars, building one of the sport’s largest fan followings. However, that momentum slowed after title losses and a social media hiatus. He now prepares to face Aiemann Zahabi at UFC Freedom 250. O’Malley recently explained why he regretted not joining the confrontation between Josh Hokit and Ilia Topuria during the White House press conference.

The incident began when Hokit directed verbal remarks at Alex Pereira during the UFC Freedom 250 press conference. Topuria stepped in to defend Pereira, sparking a heated exchange between them. As tensions continued to rise, security intervened to prevent the situation from becoming physical. The polarizing heavyweight was eventually removed from the stage, bringing the chaotic moment to an end.

While the confrontation unfolded, O’Malley sat between Hokit and Pereira, looking largely unfazed by the chaos around him. The former champion showed little reaction as tensions escalated. That contrasted with his reputation for embracing attention and using trash talk to elevate moments. O’Malley later admitted he regretted not getting involved, especially given his close proximity to Pereira.

I’m not on social, so I don’t see anything. I know that whole moment went viral, and I didn’t see Hokit saying that. Yeah, maybe I should have. But you know what, he’s not wrong. I should have been on Team Hokit. He’s absolutely right. Maybe I should have stepped back a few feet and got behind him. I think what went through my mind, if I don’t do anything and I just sit here still, it would look hilarious. That was kind of my thought process and it worked out that way. Nothing comes to mind, but I could have spoken up.

O’Malley also had reasons to involve himself, given his history with Topuria. The former bantamweight champion previously mocked Topuria’s height while both fighters openly discussed facing each other. The matchup was often mentioned during O’Malley’s title reign and generated considerable attention. Topuria has also called out ‘Suga’ and predicted he would dominate him if they ever met inside the Octagon.

O’Malley was once one of the UFC’s most entertaining superstars, regularly engaging in trash talk and chaotic moments. Those traits helped him build a massive following during his rise to championship status. Following back-to-back losses to Merab Dvalishvili, O’Malley returned under pressure to rebound. He defeated Song Yadong at UFC 324, avoiding a longer losing streak and returning to the win column.

Despite his recent decline in star power, ‘Suga’ revealed that earning a spot on the UFC Freedom 250 White House card was not easy. The 31-year-old acknowledged the challenge as he continues rebuilding momentum. With another major event approaching, Sean O’Malley will aim to create more moments during future media appearances. That could help elevate his profile heading into UFC Freedom 250.
