Khamzat Chimaev vs. Dricus Du Plessis was one of the most anticipated bouts that happened at UFC 319. Heading into the event, Chimaev was overwhelmingly the betting favorite, and inside the octagon, both fighters demonstrated exactly why that sentiment existed. The Chechen displayed complete dominance over the former champion, ultimately securing the victory by way of a clear unanimous decision.
However, the fight played out very differently compared to the absolute war that both fighters had initially promised beforehand. Across five challenging rounds, Chimaev secured over twenty-one minutes of dominant ground control, yet still couldn’t completely finish Du Plessis.
As expected, the disappointed crowd voiced their frustration with loud boos, particularly targeting the Chechen fighter despite his dominant performance. Interestingly, former UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley was also watching the entire fight online and subsequently couldn’t stop trolling.
Chimaev is like a big Khabib, he’s like big Suga Sean. Khamzat is a freak dude. He is lucky I’m 135er, boy, I swear to God…I think DDP’s heart won that fight. I think it should be who won the last round so technically I beat Merab in the 1st fight.

The first fight between O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili occurred at UFC Noche, resembling Du Plessis versus Chimaev. Both skilled contenders relied heavily on their relentless wrestling, maintaining control throughout the fight, and eventually securing impressive victories via judges’ decision. However, in the final round, O’Malley attempted a comeback, humorously sparking the joking comparison from ‘Suga.’

Following his title loss, O’Malley earned another opportunity, entering the fight with stronger mental and physical preparation. Unfortunately, in the anticipated rematch, the American fighter couldn’t impose much offense and was ultimately submitted during the third round. Considering his most recent defeat, it appears unlikely that Du Plessis receives an immediate title rematch against Chimaev.
Dricus Du Plessis’s coach blames the referee for the UFC 319 loss against Khamzat Chimaev
Ahead of the fight, Dricus Du Plessis and his coach confidently claimed they would directly challenge Khamzat Chimaev’s dominant wrestling abilities. They completely dismissed Chimaev’s ground threat, promising fans an exciting head-to-head battle, but during the actual fight, their plan collapsed.

Inside the octagon, DDP repeatedly struggled, falling short against the relentless grappling pressure, unable to mount meaningful offensive resistance. Coach Morne Visser appeared visibly annoyed, realizing he couldn’t provide any assistance to help his struggling fighter.
Referee Marc Goddard frequently intervened, stopping prolonged ground battles and forcing both fighters back to their feet for exchanges. However, according to Visser, that wasn’t enough and in a recent interview, he made sure to point that out.
I think we could have done a lot better, but I also think the ref should have done better. But you know what it’s like when you lose or something doesn’t go your way, you always want to blame somebody else. But I do think the referee should have just made that fight a… bit more live. [Chimaev] just did enough… He obviously controlled positions very very well, and he just did enough to keep the ref [from] not letting the fight stand up.

On the contrary, Goddard’s interruptions during the fight received criticism from both passionate fans and commentator Joe Rogan. After the bout, respected veterans including Robert Whittaker and Demetrious Johnson stated the fight wasn’t boring, labeling critical fans ‘casuals.’ Nevertheless, the MMA community remains divided, with some eagerly waiting to see when ‘Borz’ makes his exciting comeback fight.
