The Denver Broncos went all out to hire Sean Payton to be their head coach for the simple reason that he establishes a winning culture. His brash attitude towards opponents is a major part of that winning culture. In the win against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, corner Jaycee Horn felt that brash attitude in full effect.

When the clock crossed the seven-minute mark, the Denver Broncos were already up three full scores. But more importantly, they received the ball back after the returning Bryce Young threw it into the hands of one of their players.

Then, Sean Payton’s team played a mix of run and pass plays with two goals in mind. One was to run the clock down, which they did as the drive almost led to the two-minute warning. Second was to set them up for either a touchdown or a field goal.

The idea did not succeed as the ball was knocked out of the hands of Courtland Sutton as he tried to cross the goal line. It seems Jaycee Horn was noticing all this happen as his teammates recovered the ball back. After the game, he kept this in mind as he approached the Broncos’ head coach.

Trying to run the score up!

Sean Payton, being as unabashed as he is known to be, did not hold himself back from mouthing something. But cameras did not pick up his words. Even after greeting Panthers HC Dave Canales in the middle of the field, Payton was looking for Horner.

Sean Payton and Denver Broncos capitalize on Panthers offensive lapses

Jaycee Horn did not play a bad game, as he and his defensive teammates stopped the Denver Broncos from scoring on four of their five drives in the second half. But his offensive teammates could not turn the game around as Bryce Young threw two interceptions in the same span of time.

If anything, the Broncos tried to stretch the game, as Horn knows well, and keep their lead. Had Young kept the offense running and scored at least field goals instead of those interceptions, the game could have been closer.

Then the pressure would have been on their opponents. Instead, it was rookie quarterback Bo Nix, who shined with what was arguably his best NFL game so far. Those 284 yards and three touchdowns became a bit too much for the hapless Carolina Panthers.

If Horn and his teammates can use this incident to light a fire inside them, it can serve them well. Their next two games are against similarly mediocre teams. Win those and maybe they can hope to turn their season around.
