After last season’s fiasco with Russell Wilson, when the Denver Broncos began taking an interest in Bo Nix, it was expected that they would go forward with him in the starting. Then, as he began practicing, seeing head coach Sean Payton impressed by the rookie quarterback made the speculations more vivid.
However, when the time finally came for the team to make the ultimate decision regarding their starting quarterback in week 1 of the coming 2024 season, head coach Payton revealed not to go forward with Nix.
During his recent conversation with Kay Adams on the Up & Adams show, the host bluntly asked the most awaited question from the head coach Payton about why Nix still hasn’t been made the starting quarterback despite the impressive performance in the training camp.
The band’s still playing, they have one more song to go, two more songs. In other words, I’m not naming the starting cornerback between Riley [Moss] and [Damarri] Mathis. Meaning, I’m not doing that at these other positions with receiver… it would be different if you had made a decision with one position. I’m not ready to do it with all the positions.Sean Payton said
There’s no doubt that the Broncos trust the former Oregon Ducks quarterback’s potential, but they didn’t want to rush into it. Though they still haven’t named the starting quarterback officially, keeping the competition between Nix, Jarrett Stidham, and Zach Wilson.
Broncos are taking a different approach than Chicago Bears for starting quarterback
The Broncos are moving forward with a different strategy than the Chicago Bears, who have strategized the entire offense around rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. Even though there have been delays in the contracts and the rookie’s underwhelming performance during some practice sessions, the Bears are quite confident in moving forward with Williams in the center.
Although the situation with Williams is quite different since he doesn’t have the competition for the starting role, Nix’s journey has been filled with challenges. While the former was the No. 1 overall pick, the latter came under scrutiny over his age after being drafted as the No. 12 draft pick.
However, the Broncos’ head coach doesn’t view it as a flaw. Instead he praised the rookie quarterback over his maturity, believing he will enter his golden years sooner, which usually happens when they enter into their 30s.
