Sean Strickland has not returned to the UFC Octagon for 11 months since losing an important title bout to Dricus Du Plessis. He has mainly focused on training while remaining active through interviews, livestreams, and frequent public media appearances. Although expectations continue surrounding his next fight, Strickland remains very particular and careful about choosing his future octagon outings.

Recently, former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker expressed his desire to fight Sean Strickland before retirement. Both fighters are coming off losses and are eager to return quickly to the middleweight title conversation with momentum. However, in a recent interview, ‘Tarzan’ revealed his personal reasons for not choosing Whittaker as his next opponent.

It’s not a fight I’m excited about. He’s like the girl at the party everybody’s (expletive) and you’re just like, ehh… Maybe if 3 AM hits and there’s nobody left, I might try it.

Whittaker is currently on a two-fight losing streak, suffering a submission loss to Khamzat Chimaev and a close battle against Reinier de Ridder. Many fans are already claiming the veteran is washed and may struggle to produce a strong comeback again. Whittaker has also discussed possibly transitioning into boxing to earn money while staying active and physically fit.

On the other hand, Sean Strickland is more focused on fighting Anthony Hernandez next month in Houston. The controversial fighter believes that the matchup would feel challenging, exciting, and meaningful. ‘Fluffy’ currently rides an impressive eight-fight winning streak and remains eager to secure a long-awaited middleweight title opportunity.

It would not be surprising if this fight happens, especially since the title picture already appears mostly decided for contenders. The champion Khamzat Chimaev is expected to fight Nassourdine Imavov next, although no official announcement has confirmed those plans yet.

While neither fighter shares personal animosity, the pursuit of the championship alone provides enough motivation to justify this potential clash. It would be interesting to see whether Sean Strickland can find his way to the top in 2026.

Sean Strickland claims he was injured against Dricus Du Plessis

Last year at UFC 312, Sean Strickland faced Dricus Du Plessis for the second time, hoping to reclaim his middleweight title and prove his previous loss a fluke. Du Plessis once again controlled key moments, using pressure, clinch work, and consistent striking to frustrate Strickland throughout the contest.

Strickland showed toughness and volume, but struggled to match Du Plessis’s physicality and ability to dictate the fight’s overall pace. After five rounds, the judges awarded Du Plessis a unanimous decision victory, confirming his dominance over Strickland again.

The loss pushed Strickland further away from immediate title contention, forcing him to reconsider opponents and rebuild momentum, carefully moving forward. In the recent interview, ‘Tarzan’ revealed that he wasn’t fighting at full potential, given his injury going into that fight.

Before the Dricus fight, I broke my shoulder. I was in Colombia getting stem cells on my shoulder, and they hit me up for the fight… The thing with the UFC, dog. You don’t say no to the master. I was backed up into a corner taking that fight.

Sean Strickland continued.

Strickland has maintained a complicated love and hate relationship with the UFC, often speaking freely with unapologetic honesty. Recently, the fighter went viral for controversial comments regarding the ICE shooting incident that occurred in Minnesota.

The MAGA fighter supported the ICE agent, claiming force was used only to defend himself during dangerous situations. Despite criticism, these headlines kept Sean Strickland in constant discussions, even while remaining inactive inside the UFC Octagon.
