Sean Strickland frequently finds himself at the center of controversy due to his polarizing persona and outspoken trash talk. The newly crowned UFC middleweight champion has been vocal in pushing back against the UFC Freedom 250 event. However, his recent comments caught the attention of UFC interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje, sparking an online rivalry between the two American fighters.

The feud began after Strickland posted a video on X, revealing that UFC officials had called him and informed him he was not invited to UFC Freedom 250 at the White House South Lawn. Following the announcement, the middleweight champion launched into a lengthy rant, taking aim at the politics surrounding the event. He also made remarks that indirectly referenced Israel and its influence.

The situation escalated when a fan account suggested that Strickland should boycott UFC Freedom 250. That prompted a response from Gaethje, who told the user to keep his name out of the discussion. The fan then revealed he had been supporting Gaethje for June 14, but was no longer doing so. This led the interim lightweight champion to fire back with criticism aimed at both the fan and Strickland.

I’m American. I don’t need or want a coward’s support. You and Sean are relentlessly dumb.

Strickland has never been one to hold back when challenged, especially on social media. Despite claiming UFC officials did not invite him, he revealed that he still plans to attend UFC Freedom 250 and purchase a ticket himself. The two-time champion is also currently the promotion’s only American male undisputed champion. ‘Tarzan’ then responded with another heated rant directed at Gaethje and his criticism.

You’re a real good goy. Time to switch your flag. If being spineless makes you a good American, you can have that title. Eat your goy slop. Just do me a favor and switch your flag.

Strickland has criticized the White House event for months, repeatedly questioning its purpose and timing. He has pointed to several issues facing America while arguing that the event is disconnected from those concerns. The controversial superstar also stated that a card limited to roughly 4,800 to 5,000 VIP guests and military personnel makes little sense because of the lack of fan inclusion around the Octagon.

Justin Gaethje’s defense of UFC Freedom 250 is understandable given that he will headline the card against undefeated champion Ilia Topuria in a title unification bout. Sean Strickland, meanwhile, has said he wants to support his friend Alex Pereira in the co-main event against Ciryl Gane. However, the 185-pound champion’s recent claims and criticism have added a different tone to UFC’s plans for June 14.

MMA Insider commends Sean Strickland’s ability to beat the odds despite recent tensions

Sean Strickland entered UFC 328 as a massive +410 to +450 underdog against undefeated champion Khamzat Chimaev. Despite the odds, Strickland delivered an impressive five-round performance and secured a split-decision victory. The win made him a two-time UFC middleweight champion, three years after he shocked the world by defeating Israel Adesanya to capture the title at UFC 293.

While much of the MMA world praised Strickland’s performance, Ariel Helwani revisited the champion’s actions before and after the fight. Strickland had spent weeks trash-talking Chimaev before apologizing, embracing his opponent, and putting their rivalry behind them. The shift drew significant backlash, but Helwani has since backed Strickland and praised his ability to defy the odds when it matters most.

Sean Strickland deserves all the credit in the world. Maybe he wasn’t the most deserving person to be fighting Khamzat, but he got that shot because of his performance against Fluffy and because of his mouth. He did everything he needed to do. We’ve seen people talk a big game and not show up. He freaking showed up. He broke Khamzat in that second round. The aura of invincibility surrounding Khamzat took a massive hit. An outstanding performance.

Before UFC Houston in February 2026, Strickland was not considered a frontrunner for a middleweight title shot, with Nassourdine Imavov and former champion Dricus Du Plessis viewed as stronger options. However, Sean Strickland changed the conversation with a TKO win over Anthony ‘Fluffy’ Hernandez. The victory pushed him back into contention and ultimately led to his championship upset at UFC 328.
