On Saturday, American tennis player Sebastian Korda was so frustrated with his defeat to compatriot Tommy Paul in the Queen’s Club Championships semifinal that he broke his racket in two. The 23-year-old lost to Paul in straight sets and saw his way out of the ATP 500 tournament. This defeat comes after Korda lost to Alex de Minaur in the S-Hertogenbosch final.
Korda played great tennis throughout the tournament in London but could not stand a chance against Paul, who walked away with the game comfortably. Although Korda fought his way back into the match after losing the first set 4-6 and took the second set into a tiebreaker, he could not overpower Paul and lost the match.
The frustration was evident for Korda, who vented it on the racket. The American broke his racket into two by smashing it on his thighs. Korda did this when he was trailing 4-2 in the second set. The pictures of the American breaking his racket and then walking with it in his hands went viral on social media.
Sebastian Korda helps Tommy Paul script history
While he might not be able to help himself, Sebastian Korda did play a big part in Tommy Paul‘s scripting history. As Korda lost to his compatriot in straight sets, Paul became the first American finalist at Queen’s since an all-American final in 2010, when Sam Querrey beat Mardy Fish to lift the trophy.
The 27-year-old will next face Lorenzo Musetti in the title clash. With this win over Korda, Paul avenged his quarter-final defeat to Korda in S-Hertogenbosch last week. Also, Paul managed his second AP 500 final with this win. The senior American was delighted to have made it to the final in London.
I am happy and I feel every time I step on grass I learn something and play a little better. I felt like I did a pretty good job today.Tommy Paul said. (H/T: ATP Tour)
Musetti and Paul will battle it out for the title on Sunday. Both players will be motivated to lift their first title on grass this season. While Paul scripted history, Musetti also became just the fifth Italian man to reach a grass-court tour-level final on Saturday at the Queen’s Championships, where he moved past Australian Jordan Thompson 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in London.
