Sebastian Korda reveals being in a love-hate relationship with Andy Murray because of Rafael Nadal
Andy Murray and Sebastian Korda
During an October 25, 2022 interview, popular American professional tennis player Sebastian Korda confessed that he, in particular, did not like British legend and former World No.1 Andy Murray after defeating the Brit at the recent Gijon Open. He even provided a very cheeky reason for this, leaving fans in a frenzy.
For those who are unaware, Sebastian Korda is one of the few players who come from a sporting lineage. The American professional tennis player is the son of 1998 Australian Open champion Petr Korda and former tennis player Regina Rajchrtová. He is currently one of the best young talents on the ATP tour with the Emilia-Romagna Open ATP 250 men’s singles title up on his winning charts. Since then, the player has been making all the right noises with his exceptional performances over the past couple of years.
“I always have like a love-hate relationship with him growing up because my favorite players were Nadal and Radek Stepanek and he would always beat up on them sometimes,” he said.
“So I never ‘liked’ him, but I love watching him play, and just getting to practice with him and to play a match against him was really awesome. It was just a special match,” Continuing his train of thought, he further added.
Korda and Murray played against each other in the quarter-final round match of the Gijon Open ATP 250 tournament. In this match, however, the American defeated Murray 6-4 1-6 6-1. But the American believes that Andy Murray is still a tough opponent to beat on the tennis court. He appreciated some of the talents and skills that the London Olympics 2012 gold medallist has acquired with experience over all these years.
“His anticipation and the way he kind of reads the game when he’s fully healthy. He was arguably one of the best defensive-offensive players that we’ve had in tennis and to get to see that with my own eyes and to play against it was something that I’ve never really felt. He can just see where you’re going most of the time, and it’s not a good feeling to see on the other side,” praising his opponent Sebastian Korda said.
Sebastian Korda’s ATP season so far
Sebastian Korda has had a tough season so far, with a slew of difficulties going on in his professional front. With poor performance in the Grand Slams, he could not reach the fourth round of the Australian Open. In the Indian Wells Open, he defeated Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round but lost to Rafael Nadal in the second round.
At both the Miami Open and Monte-Carlo Masters, he exited both tournaments in the third round itself. On clay, he struggled to crash out of the Madrid Open and Italian Open in the second and first rounds, respectively. Talking about the French Open, he lost to Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz in the third round in straight sets.
At Cincinnati Masters, he defeated some big names including the likes of popular Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov and American professional player Frances Tiafoe to reach the third round before being defeated by John Isner. More interestingly, though, in the past two months, he managed to pick up some pace and is all set for an ultimate comeback. The American reached back-to-back finals of two important ATP tournaments, that is, the Gijon Open and European Cup, losing on both occasions.
Sebastian Korda is ranked as World No.33 and would like to finish his year in the Top 32 so that he gets a direct seed to play in the main draw of the upcoming Australian Open in 2023.
