“Seeking compromise”: Deshaun Watson and the NFL’s settlement talks have stalled Peter C. Harvey’s ruling on the QB
Deshaun Watson
The Deshaun Watson saga is not yet over. Despite the quarterback recieving a ruling from disciplinary officer Judge Sue L. Robinson who imposed a ban of 6-games, the NFL is not happy about this as the league believes it is not harsh enough. In the ruling, Watson’s behavior was termed as “egregious” and in a rare move, Commissioner Roger Goodell has gotten his hands dirty and stepped into the ring by publicly criticizing Watson’s behavior.
The league had to take a harsh stance given the amount of public backlash that followed the initial ruling, though the quarterback has settled 23 of 24 civil cases, his public image has been ruined and the league’s punishment policy has not been the best in recent history. Calvin Ridley was suspended an entire season for placing a $1200 bet on his own team, if Watson gets anything less, the league will have a lot of questions to answer.

Deshaun Watson agreed to an eight-game suspension along with a $5 million fine:
Deshaun Watson has been willing to settle this entire matter but the NFL has been reluctant but now after the league filed an appeal and appointed former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey to look into the reports and announce a more severe punishment onto the quarterback.
The talks between the league and the NFLPA on a discipline settlement for Watson seems to have progressed substantially, it is not yet certain if both sides will reach any solid conclusion but the Associated Press reports that both sides are seeking a compromise before any punishment is handed down by Harvey. Watson was reportedly willing to accept an eight-game suspension with a hefty fine of $5 million. The NFL has been attempting to pursue a longer suspension for Watson, it is now uncertain if Harvey is waiting for both the sides to talk settlements and see if they can close the matter for good before he announces his ruling.
A settlement is good because it increases the odds of Deshaun Watson getting onto the field this season for the Browns, who have a lot invested into him financially and otherwise. The quarterback recently apologized in public for the first time since the allegations surfaced. The Cleveland Browns have been hoping that Deshaun would be out for a substantial part of the 2022 season and Jacoby Brissett is expected to start for him but if the ruling comes down hard and suspends him for another season, the Browns may consider the possibility of signing a veteran quarterback such as Jimmy G for a year to ensure they don’t throw this season away.
Watson did not look good in his preseason appearance against Jacksonville Jaguars, his throws were way off and he overthrew his first pass back and ended with a dismal 1/5 for 7 yards in three series. This is not surprising as Watson has been out for 600 days and he needs time to get back into form but with the uncertainty of his suspension looming over his head, he is mentally not in the right place and is unable to dedicate his full attention towards football.
Browns’ coach Kevin Stefanski has not yet revealed any information with respect to the starter against the upcoming game against the Eagles. Watson may get some more reps in this game as Jacoby Bissett is not expected to play in this game.
