Grigor Dimitrov has dedicated his success to the self-discipline he has undertaken these years. Currently ranked No. 16 in the world, the 29 year-old explained how the self-discipline he has developed helped him in his 13 year long career since turning pro in 2008.

Dimitrov achieved his highest ever ranking in November, 2017 when he broke into the Top 3, jumping from the 6th and claiming the 3rd position which he held till mid-January, 2018. The Bulgarian remained in the Top 10 well into October,2018 but since has had a poor run with his shoulder injury doing further damage. Even with his injuries, he has managed to remain in the Top 100 right from 2011, 3 years since he turned pro, winning 8 titles enroute.

Currently playing at the Acapulco Open, in an interview with El Economista, the Bulgarian gave credit to his success that he has built with structure, self-discipline and writing down thoughts or details to remember. Speaking in the interview, Dimitrov said, “With good habits. If you have self-discipline, you will always be fine. I try to keep good discipline. Sleeping on time at night, getting up early, getting away from the phone a bit, starting the day well doing necessary things, like having a coffee, reading the news, giving myself some preparation time because it is 50 or 60% of success.”

Commenting on strengthening his mentality, “I read things that interest me. Although it is a different type of literature. I also support myself with the people with whom I interact, be it family or psychologist. It is important to emphasize mental health, I also write thoughts or explore things that strengthen me.” During the pandemic, when everything was halted, Dimitrov worked on his foundation for the Bulgarian children, and studied a course at the Harvard Business School while reflecting on his future beyond tennis.

On asked about his time management between studies and tennis, Dimitrov said, “Honestly, it was very difficult from the beginning. I started with good grades, but at a certain point I didn’t have time to complete everything. Of course when I have a little time I pay close attention to it. But it is already different from what I do, now I am more active. I used to sit and study; my life changed in the last few months ”.

Dimitrov over the years has grown into a very marketable athlete, signing deals with Nike, Wilson and Rolex to name a few. Speaking on his business ventures, “I have just opened my foundation of which I am very proud, I do many businesses especially related to children and education. My path has expanded along the way. I have many friends who support me and know a lot, teach me and make me improve not only in tennis ”.

The intellectual side of Dimitrov came forward in this interview to his fans across the globe. A studious athlete, he took inspiration from Tiger Woods, when he was struggling to even put his socks on due to his back injury at the 2021 Australian Open. “I finished the quarter-finals in Australia and had a back problem. I remembered Tiger Woods, I related him and I see him as an extraordinary of the sport ”.

Dimitrov is currently in the quarter final of the Acapulco Open with a straight set victory in his R16 match, and is a serious contender for the title.
