Did Serena Williams intend to call out Drake during her Super Bowl performance? Williams didn’t make any remarks on it and rather revealed the real reason behind her crip walk to Drake’s nemesis Kendrick Lamar‘s song during the halftime.

When Lamar was performing his ‘Not Like Us’ Drake diss track, the camera moved toward a woman in a blue jacket and a tennis skirt grooving to the music. It was Williams of course and her dance not only entertained the crowd but was perceived as a dig at the Canadian rapper.

Williams was rumored to be in a relationship with Drake before she met her now husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg, who was impressed by Williams’ dance, even recalled how Drake would follow Williams everywhere she went, in his article for Slate.

And in the wake of the Super Bowl, Drake took to his Instagram to share a picture of him with Williams’ former agent Jill Smoller. Amidst all this, Williams revealed the conversation she had with Lamar that prompted her to collaborate with him.

When @kendricklamar and team called and was like ‘we’ve been trying to do something forever, what about this? We loved your crip walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal.’ I’m like Super Bowl? Are you serious? When in the world would I ever be able to dance at a Super Bowl? (Never) let’s do it! I knew my winning dance after the @olympics would pay off one day. End of story.

Not every comment was positive. ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith criticized the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion by joking that if he was Williams’ husband, he would divorce her for ‘trolling her ex’. When Alexis Ohanian came across the tweet, he took a cheeky jibe at him.
