The 2026 season has only just begun, with numerous performances in the tennis circuit already being monitored. However, it has been a sour start to the season for Taylor Fritz. The American lost in the United Cup to Sebastian Baez in the first round.
The performance indicators were poor, and they reached Serena Williams‘ ex-coach, Rennae Stubbs. Stubbs highlighted Fritz’s net-game as one of the reasons behind his poor performance against Baez.
Been saying 4 years on my pod, if Taylor got more comfortable at the net he would win more! This point illustrates why not being comfortable there loses him matches! NO CHANCE u lose this point if u can volley well.

Fritz has been knocking on the door for the past two seasons in the Grand Slams. However, he has ended up losing to the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, pretty much like the rest of the circuit.

Fritz is looking to end a 23-year barren run of a male American Grand Slam champion. The last American to win a Grand Slam was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open.
Taylor Fritz responds well after early United Cup setback
The United States reached the United Cup quarter-finals in Perth. They advanced after a tricky group result against Spain on Monday. It was a tense finish in Group A.

Taylor Fritz kept the U.S. on track. He saved a match point against Jaume Munar. His win protected the defending champions’ chances.
Coco Gauff lost earlier in a surprise three-set match. Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro beat her. The pressure then shifted to the mixed doubles.
Gauff bounced back in mixed doubles with Christian Harrison. They won 7-6(5), 6-0 over Inigo Cervantes and Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers. Spain was eliminated after that result.
Taylor Fritz Gives Another Injury Update
Taylor Fritz has been managing a knee injury at the United Cup. He gave an update after his match. He suggested the injury was not the main reason for his struggle.

The knee is something I’m going to be dealing with for a while. I started feeling it towards the end of the first set, but it didn’t get any worse. Typically, I start feeling it, and it gets worse and worse and worse until I can’t even bend it. So I’m really happy with the fact that it stayed at the level it was at, and it wasn’t bad enough to stop me from playing through.

He then battled through a marathon against Jaume Munar. The match lasted three hours and 14 minutes. Fritz won it in a deciding tie-break.
Fritz had to win because the U.S. started poorly. Coco Gauff lost to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. That upset put Spain in a strong position.
Fritz’s win shifted the momentum back. Gauff and Christian Harrison won the doubles against Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers and Íñigo Cervantes. The U.S. topped the group and reached the quarter-finals.
