Former World No. 1 Serena Williams has donned the hat of an entrepreneur and investor ever since her retirement. She was actively pursuing non-tennis interests during her playing days as well. However, ever since her retirement, the scale has increased considerably as the business side has now taken priority.
As the USA is currently preparing for the 2024 WNBA Draft, there is quite a lot of excitement around it. Following the conclusion of the NCAA Championships recently, where the South Carolina Gamecocks emerged champions, a new generation of stars is waiting to be drafted.
Speaking on the rise in investment in women’s sports, Williams had quite an interesting take. She believed each sport has its moment, and currently, it is women’s basketball. The 23-time singles Grand Slam title winner felt tennis has had its moment and is now enjoying the result, but now it’s basketball’s time.
I think the moment's been happening, we just needed the right catalyst and the right people. I think women's sport is having a moment that it should've always had. I feel like tennis has had its moment. It's international and it's huge and it's always going to be there, and it's time to lift up other sports.said Serena Williams, speaking with CNN.
The American was also questioned about whether she would like to become the owner of a WNBA team. She currently owns the National Women’s Soccer League team, Angel City FC, based in Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Golf Club, with a majority ownership stake in both.
I think with the right market, I think would definitely be super interested in that. There is no risk (factor). Women’s sport is exciting, women are exciting to watch. What’s the difference? I think that even more people watched the college women’s basketball than the men. So I think that people are realizing that is exciting to watch.Added Serena Williams
Serena Williams has been focusing a lot on promoting women-run businesses to uplift society
Williams became an investor with Serena Ventures while she was still active on the Tour. Through her company, she has funded many start-ups whose work aligns with her vision. One common trait between the companies was that they were mostly run by women or were women-centric.

Apart from this, Williams has also funded projects and companies for people of color. Having faced racism quite extensively during her entire career, she knows how things could get difficult out there. Hence, she has promoted those businesses first to provide equal opportunity.
Similarly, her investments in the sporting world also follow this trait. With the women’s soccer league team in ownership with her husband Alexis Ohanian and daughter Olympia, she is putting the values in her daughter as well.
