Tennis legend Serena Williams hasn’t been seen in action after getting injured in the semis of the 2021 Australian Open. The American was supposed to make an appearance at the Miami Open in March, but had withdrawn at the last moment due to an oral surgery.

Finally, the 23-time Grand Slam winner will return to action at the ongoing Italian Open this week. This will also be her first tournament on clay for the year. Serena is also a four time winner in the Italian capital. She won the tournament in 2002, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

The 39-year-old mother is already in Rome and amidst her practice sessions, she took time off to explore the city. Serena was also spotted enjoying gelatos with her husband, Alexis Ohanian and daughter Olympia.

Serena has been one of the very few players in the last decade to have won all the major titles across surfaces and is also the only player in contemporary tennis to have all the four Grand Slams at least twice.

Many believe that Serena is arguably the greatest female player of all time in the history, but has not been able to equal the most number of Grand Slam titles won by Margaret Court, who sits on 24.

Serena is currently ranked No.8 in the WTA rankings and will open her Italian Open campaign against one of Laura Siegmund or Nadia Podoroska in the round of 32.
