‘You have to keep going, you cannot stop’: Serena Williams on being a successful business woman
Serena Williams
We all know Serena Williams the tennis superstar, but how many of us know that she is a successful business woman as well. The 23 time Grand slam winner and possibly the greatest tennis player of all time rarely talks about the ‘other’ side of her life.
Talking about her business ventures Serena says that she has it easy in terms of people willing to give their time for meetings, willing to hear her out etc, but not in terms of actually saying yes to the business proposition. Serena also says that, sometimes people want to have a meeting only to see the superstar tennis player. Serena says the challenge is to make people understand that she is competent enough, educated enough to get the job done.
Serena says being an athlete, she has that resilience and that tenacity, and she just doesn’t give up. Her advice to young people is the same, don’t give up until you have exhausted all your options, and still don’t stop just ‘pivot’. Move on to a new idea, or thought and start working on that. Giving up is never an option, says Serena Williams.
Serena Ventures and ‘S by Serena’ a closer look
Back in 2014 was the first time Serena started backing companies through investments. Her firm Serena Ventures focuses on early-stage investments in companies led by women and people of color, and those that value “individual empowerment” and creativity. Serena Ventures in 2021 has only two other employees, apart from Serena Williams, but manages the portfolio of more than 63 companies.
In 2019 Serena founded her clothing line, which is completely online. This exclusive clothing line that uses the hashtag #BeSeenBeHeard is called S by Serena and is a complete e-commerce outlet. So basically the customer can shop for the products online and get them delivered without any middlemen. Serena believes that e-commerce is the way of the future, and considering she saw this coming in 2019, you have to doff your hat to Serena Williams the businesswoman.
