Serge Ibaka pens emotional message to Raptors fans after joining Clippers
Serge Ibaka
After the much spoken about acquisition of Serge Ibaka, seems like history repeated itself as another Toronto Raptors’ player joins LA Clippers. Last season it was Kawhi Leonard, now it is Serge Ibaka. The Clippers would be at some ease after not being able to capture Rajon Rondo, they atleast have registered Ibaka in their roaster.
The 31-year-old veteran joined the Raptors in 2016-17 mid-season. The Orlando Magic received Terrence Ross and a future 1st-round pick for Serge in February 2017. This remained a great signing for the Raptors because the star went on to score his career-high scores with them.
Serge Ibaka pens down an emotional message to the Raptors’ fan
Air Congo took to Instagram to thank his fans and the entire Raptors organization. He wrote, “It is really a great organization that takes care of its players and I’m thankful that I became an NBA Champion with them. I’ve had great teammates, front office and staff next to me. And of course, a fan base that is second to none. So thank you Toronto.”
Ibaka had his options open from the Raptors, the Nets, and the Clippers. Arguably, the Raptors could have paid Ibaka enough to keep him for one more year. But the star center also knew that his chances of winning a championship were greater with the Clippers. Moreso, his kinship with Kawhi Leonard could’ve further eased his decision.
Having said that the Raptors were able to re-sign Fred VanVleet with a lucrative 4-year $85 million deal. But with Ibaka gone, they would need to fill the required whole in their defense to go to the ultimate distance in the 2020-21 season.
