Sergi Roberto is synonymous with FC Barcelona’s philosophy. From Xavi Hernandez to Ronald Koeman, the versatile midfielder has been a trusted option under several managers in the past. From gifting an iconic moment against Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 to captaining his boyhood club at the age of 32, the Spaniard’s story has been inspirational.

However, it appears that Roberto’s dream run with the Blaugrana has come to an end, with the club releasing an emotional farewell video on social media. Roberto joined Barcelona B back in 2009, before making his senior professional debut under Pep Guardiola in 2010. Even though he has been deemed as ‘surplus to requirements’ several times in the past, the player has found a way to integrate himself to the first team time and again.

However, Hansi Flick‘s arrival at the club coincided with the expiration of his contract. After the German manager no longer saw him as a requirement for his squad, the club were left with no option but to let Roberto walk.

Even though there have been rumors linking him to League rivals Girona, there has been no significant developments as to finding a new club.

As the midfielder bids farewell to the club, fans couldn’t help but recall his bursting sprint through Real Madrid’s midfield to set up Lionel Messi for his iconic 3-2 winner in 2017. The only other moment that eclipses his amazing dribble is his last-minute winner against Paris Saint-Germain to complete the ‘Remontada’.

Even though fans have turned against him in recent seasons and relentlessly called for his disposal, the player leaves the club with his head held high. Roberto has made 245 appearances for Barcelona’s senior team, scoring a total of 12 goals in the process.
