Sergio Aguero - A Manchester City legend

Manchester City have confirmed that Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero will leave when his current contract runs out this summer. Aguero is set to leave the English club after an association of 10 years since his arrival from Atletico Madrid as a youngster.

Aguero joined City in 2011 as a 22-year old striker and has broken many records during his time at Manchester. The 32-year old striker has won 14 trophies so far in his Manchester City career and has the prospect of adding 3 more this season.

Aguero is Manchester City’s record goal-scorer having scored 257 goals in his 384 appearances overall for the club. He is the highest scoring overseas player in Premier League history – and in January 2020 he overtook Alan Shearer to set the record for the most Premier League hat-tricks after registering his 12th away at Aston Villa.

Apart for his goal scoring records, Aguero will always be remembered as the player who handed the epic Premier league title to City in 2012, when he scored the winner against QPR in the final minutes to snatch the title from Manchester United.

City’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak announced the emotional farewell for the Argentinian striker who has struggled with injuries this season. The striker has missed most of the games for the Premier league leaders but Pep Guardiola will count on him to deliver once again as they look to win the all elusive Champions league trophy for one last time in a City shirt.

Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: “Sergio’s contribution to Manchester City over the last 10 years cannot be overstated. His legend will be indelibly etched into the memories of everyone who loves the Club and maybe even in those who simply love football.

“This is not yet the moment for farewell words and speeches. There is still much to achieve in the remainder of the time we have with Sergio, and we look forward to his contributions to the challenges which lay ahead.

“In the meantime, it gives me great pleasure to announce that we will be commissioning an artist to create a statue of Sergio to live at the Etihad Stadium alongside the ones under construction for Vincent and David. And we look forward to the opportunity to bid Sergio a fitting farewell at the end of the season.”

A potential list of suitors has already been listed for acquiring the services of Aguero next season. Barcelona is the likeliest destination as he had previously fuelled rumours of playing alongside his countryman Lionel Messi.
