“Served another bagel” Iga Swiatek extends her win streak to 24 in her opening match at Rome
Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek extended her winning streak to 24 matches after this opening-round victory against Elena-Gabriela Rune in the Italian Open 2022. She beat Rune 6-3, 6-0, and it was never close, as was expected of Swiatek. Her break after the Stuttgart conquest was well-timed as it has not affected her play. She also seems well rested for the upcoming French Open 2022.
Swiatek is the player to beat in the women’s draw, and she is a huge favorite to both defend her title in Rome and win at the Roland-Garros. Swiatek has emerged as an unstoppable force after piling up these victories. She had changed herself in the manner that she embraced the aggressive mindset and playing style and has become far more dangerous than she was a few months ago. She doesn’t just win matches, she wins them dominatingly.

An unstoppable force, Iga Swiatek moves forward in Rome.
Internazionali BNL d’Italia started with the the defending champion Swiatek geared up for a title defense and gaining a bit more familiarity on the tricky surface. She has evolved beautifully and her game looks just so easy and commanding that she looks invincible. There is no chink in Iga’s armour and that would be a tough ask for any player to break her. She was very happy with her performance. In an interview with WTA Tennis, she said:
“I’m pretty proud I could get into the rhythm today, just take some lessons during the match and improve my game, game by game,”. She continued:
“That was pretty solid match for me … I think she’s playing really solid tennis. I could feel that today on my racquet, that she could really give back some strong hits.”
On her next matchup with Victoria Azarenka, Swiatek says: “I was actually talking with my coach, what’s the difference between her game on hard court and clay. For sure we’re going to analyze that. Tactically I’m going to be prepared,”
“I’ve never even had a chance to play a practice with her on clay, so I’m not sure how the game is going to look like … She’s such an experienced player that you have to be ready for variety. You have to be ready for facing a lot of variety in her game.”
