The San Francisco Giants made a huge move on Monday. After missing the playoffs again, the team decided to move on from manager Bob Melvin. The team announced the firing of the manager following another disappointing season.
The National League West side had a mixed season. They had a solid start and were 8-2 in their opening 10 games. At that point, it seemed there could be a three-way race for the division title between them, the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Over the course of the season, the team had their moments. They would go on some big winning runs, but also suffer some huge slumps. The team ended the first half of the season with 2 losses against the Dodgers, leaving them with a 52-45 record.
A 6-game losing run towards the end of July saw them fall below the .500 win percentage mark. A 7-game skid in the middle of August saw them fall 5 games below .500 with a 59-64 record.
Melvin’s team did bounce back and stitched some wins together to get back into contention for the title and remain in the wild card race. Their inconsistent performances in September saw them drop several games against the Dodgers. They capped off the campaign with a 4-game win streak that saw them finish with an 81-81 record.

This saw them miss the playoffs once again. It was the 8th time in their last 9 seasons that the Giants had missed the playoffs. Following this latest disappointment, the team decided it was time to part ways with Melvin.
In an announcement made on X, the team revealed that they had dismissed him as the manager of the team.

Melvin was hired by the team in 2023 from the Padres to replace Gabe Kepler. On July 1, the team would exercise his club option for the 2026 season. However, after the way the season ended, the management decided to let him go and bring in someone new.
In his two seasons at the helm, the 63-year-old finished with a 161-163 record (80-82 in 2024) and missed the playoffs on both occasions.

Melvin has more than 2 decades of experience as a manager in the MLB. After two seasons with the Seattle Mariners, he would join the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005 and spend 5 seasons with them. He would then spend 11 seasons with the Athletics in Oakland before joining the Padres in 2022.
Giants’ president of baseball operations Buster Posey comments on firing of Bob Melvin
Bob Melvin’s time with the San Francisco Giants came to an end on Monday. The 3-time Manager of the Year was relieved of his duties after the team failed to make the playoffs again. The team’s president of baseball operations Buster Posey later commented on this.

In a Zoom call with the reporters on Monday, Posey admitted that it difficult to cut ties with him due to his Bay Area roots. Melvin, a California native, would play for his hometown Giants team from 1986 to 1988.
It wasn’t enjoyable. I knew how much this job meant to Bob. He’s somebody that I’ve admired as a manager for a long time… Bob was extremely gracious. He cares about this organization. He cares about the players. He wants to see them be successful.

Posey did admit that he has a few candidates in mind regarding the next manager of the team. With 3-time World Series winner with the team, Bruce Bochy, also leaving the Texas Rangers on Monday, many want to see a reunion between him and the Giants. Only time will tell though, who Posey picks as the successor of Melvin.
