With the two MVP-level players on display in Gilgeous-Alexander and Trae Young, the state was set for a guard duel. The night ended with the Thunder defeating the Hawks 118-104. But the highlight of the night was easily Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP-level performance.

The Canadian sensation stuffed the stat sheet in a major performance. He ended the game with 35 points, 11 boards, and nine assists, alongside three blocks and as many steals. His counterpart on the Hawks ended with 24 points and eight assists.

However, Young’s offensive output wasn’t enough to surpass the MVP-level performance of Gilgeous-Alexander. Last season, he finished the league second in the MVP race, behind Denver’s Nikola Jokic. The 2x All-Star entered this season as one of the front runners to win the contentious award.

The 26-year-old Alexander has already opened the season with a series of noteworthy performances. He is averaging nearly 29 points over his first three games, alongside 8.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists.
