Every second counts in the high-stakes environment of the NBA Finals, and every mistake might have a lasting impact. A missed game-winning shot by the team’s MVP and a game-winning shot from the opposition in the last seconds compounded the pain of losing Game 1 on home soil for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Given that, former NBA player Lou Williams made his feelings clear regarding SGA and the Thunder after Game 1’s performance. Williams, in particular, pinpointed this loss on the 2025 NBA MVP, SGA. He stated that the Thunder star did not allow his teammates much into the game. However, SGA had a great solo performance in Game 1.
I gotta give this one to SGA [Shai Gilgeous-Alexander], the ball got sticky last night… he probably shot them [Thunder] out of it.

The expectations are high for Gilgeous-Alexander. He represents the dreams of both his club and its supporters as a key player in their goals of winning a championship. The pressure to perform is reminiscent of iconic moments in NBA history, particularly following a devastating loss. True champions are created in these competitive pressure situations, and Gilgeous-Alexander is currently at a pivotal point in his career.
The way forward necessitates both reflection and resolve, as Gilgeous-Alexander considers the close loss. It’s an opportunity to evaluate, adjust, and overcome. There is an opportunity for SGA to reshape his legacy. A crucial Game 1 defeat can either weigh heavily on a team or serve as a springboard for success.
The basketball world will be watching him closely as the series progresses to see if he can grasp the opportunity and write a tale that is worthy of the greats who came before him. Ultimately, it is about perseverance, development, and the unwavering quest for perfection rather than just salvation.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander shared his views after Game 1 loss in the NBA Finals
The Thunder fell at home against the Pacers in Game 1 of the NBA Finals by 111-110. NBA MVP winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander addressed the media after the game on the Thunder’s response and the fallout from the defeat. He provided a straightforward explanation of the Thunder’s strategy for dealing with this setback.
We just got to focus on being better. This series isn’t first to one, it’s first to four. So we have four more games to win and they have three, that’s just where we are. We’ve got to understand that and we got to get to four before they get to three if we want to win the NBA championship, it’s that simple. It’s not rocket science, we lost Game 1. We have to be better.

Gilgeous-Alexander led all scorers with 38 points during the match. In addition to those points, he had five rebounds and three assists. He went three of six from outside the arc and seven of eight coming from the free-throw line, making 14 of his 30 field-goal attempts during the contest. It remains to be seen how SGA performs in the upcoming Game 2 on Sunday.
Shaquille O’Neal called out Shai Gilgeous-Alexander regarding his post-game remarks ahead of Game 2
The Pacers are the underdogs in this series, just like in the Knicks series, but that means nothing to this team. The Thunder, on the other hand, had only themselves to blame when they lost a nine-point lead late in the fourth quarter. Now, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal hopped on this matter, calling out their star man, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, for his post-game remarks.
It’s not just another game… I understand it’s your first time here… You don’t win? There’s a chance you don’t get back. I was fortunate enough to go back 6 times, but this is not another game.
Shaquille O’Neal said
Even though Shaq can be very harsh and critical of some of today’s younger players, he did win four NBA titles during his career and understands how difficult it is to even return to the NBA Finals, let alone with everything else going on. Now, all SGA has to do is prove his worth once again, just like he did all season in this ongoing series.
