There seems to be no stopping Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at the moment. The reigning scoring champion, league MVP and Finals MVP has been on a tear this season. The three-time NBA All-Star helped the defending champions beat the Golden State Warriors, 124-112, at the Chase Center on Tuesday night as they extended their winning streak to 13 games.

The Oklahoma City Thunder guard scored 38 points on the night making five out of six three-pointers and seven free-throws from 10 attempts. The win propelled the OKC to 21-1 for the season as they continue to rack up the wins and make a run for the league-record of 74 wins in a season while the Warriors slipped to 11-11 and are currently placed at eighth in the Western conference standings.

While there is no doubt that the OKC are the best team in the league at the moment, they have been accused of having foul calls go in their favor more often than not. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is one of the few top-scorers in the league that does not rely much on the three-point shot. He relies more on the mid-range and is a driver of the ball, often drawing free throws.

Following the win over the Warriors, SGA was seen giving autographs to fans and one Warriors fan appeared to heckle the 27-year-old.

Please let’s flop for more free throws baby. You can do it dog. You can break the free throw record by flopping a little bit more. I want to see a black man win but I don’t like flopping. You’re good enough to win the right way.

Credit has to be given to SGA for just putting up a smile and not engaging with the fan. His style of play has drawn criticism from fans and opposing players as well as coaches. SGA is currently averaging 32.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.5 assists and is only behind Los Angeles star Luka Doncic (35.3) in points per game this campaign.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to win another league MVP?

SGA is looking to win back-to-back league MVP awards. But it is going to be anything but easy as it appears to be a three-way race at the moment. One of the rivals includes three-time league MVP and Denver Nuggets center, Nikola Jokic, who has been on a rampage this season. While the Nuggets have hit a few bumps in recent weeks, their star player is averaging a triple-double after 21 games.

The other rival is Doncic, who is currently leading the scoring list and is fighting for his first MVP title. The Slovenian guard has been the star of the show for the Lakers as they currently sit at second in the standings.

Former NBA player and ESPN basketball analyst, Tim Legler, believes that SGA will be crowned as the MVP this season.

Somehow, some way, he is getting to those numbers (despite not playing in fourth quarters) and has actually improved upon an incredible year, a year ago, with possibly unprecedented team success. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, barring injury, is going to win the MVP again.

Considering the way OKC are wiping out their opponents, it is highly likely that team success may play a role and end up being an advantage for SGA in securing his second league MVP award.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s ceiling as a team

There is nothing better than being an OKC fan right now. Coming off their first ever NBA championship, well on course to breaking the 73-9 regular season record set by the Warriors in 2016, some of their young players are yet to hit their primes and they still have an impressive collection of draft picks.

Worrying times ahead for the rest of the league. Four time NBA All-Star, Demarcus Cousins, spoke about how much more scary they can become in the future on Run It Back.

The real scary part is when you look at this starting lineup of OKC, it’s only one player in their prime in the starting lineup and that’s Shai. So it just goes to show how much more scarier this team can become. Can you imagine Chet and Jaylen Williams in their prime? It’s crazy.

OKC look like they have the potential to be a dynasty based on how things are going at the moment. It has been a while since the league has seen a dynasty, since the Warriors from 2015 to 2019. The future looks promising for SGA and his men.
