The Oklahoma City Thunder, who recently finished their incredible 68-14 regular season, guaranteed themselves a return to the NBA Finals for the first time after Kevin Durant led the franchise in 2012.
With a total score of 124-94, the Thunder defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves by a margin of 30 points to knock out their Western Conference Finals opponents.
However, it was the Thunder star Shai-Gilgeous Alexander who took home all the plaudits and plenty of new accolades as well. Firstly, SGA was named the WCF Finals’ MVP, this achievement comes a few days later after he won the NBA MVP award last Thursday. In addition to this, SGA also joined an exclusive club, with stars like Stephen Curry and LeBron James being included in the list.
SGA has joined Steph Curry, LeBron James, and the late legendary Kobe Bryant as the only basketball players in the past 20 years to make it to the Finals while earning MVP by ensuring a trip to the Finals. By accompanying some of the greatest prominent figures in the NBA, he further cemented his position as the league’s face.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the first player to win MVP and reach the NBA Finals in the same season since Steph Curry in 2015-16.

SGA had been the team’s rock throughout the playoffs, but he had also done so during the regular campaign when Chet Holmgren, his number two option, missed over two months due to injury. During the playoffs as well as into the Finals, the Thunder star was able to lead his team to the best record in the league and guarantee home court.
Now, the main goal for SGA and Co. remains: winning the 2025 NBA title against one of the Indiana Pacers/the New York Knicks. It’s pretty sure, SGA would be looking to deliver these same performances in the NBA Finals in a few days time.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander achieves a unique feat, including Warriors star Stephen Curry
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been the Thunder’s most reliable offensive player this season. Be it the regular season or the playoffs, SGA has stepped up in almost every game for his side. Game 5 of the WCF Finals was no different as he added another 30+ point performance this season. With this performance, SGA achieved another feat.
Since 2017, no player has ever scored more than thirty points in four series-ending games in a single season. That year, Steph Curry was the last man to do it. Curry and the Golden State Warriors won the NBA championship that season. This season, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander can accomplish the same.

However, it won’t be an easy task. This season, the NBA has been full of surprises, with the #1 seed Cleveland Cavaliers being knocked out by the Indiana Pacers in the East during the playoffs. Hence, it is better not to make any conclusions before, despite the Thunder being in pole position to win the NBA title this year.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made a remark regarding the 2025 NBA Finals
In the Thunder’s 124-94 triumph, the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) recorded 34 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists, helping the team win the best-of-seven Western Conference finals series 4-1. However, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is not resting anytime soon. After the game, he made a clear remark regarding his ‘main goal’ of this season.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said, “This is a step in the right direction but we have a lot more work to do to get to our ultimate goal, so let’s buckle up and get ready.”
Next Thursday, the Thunder will play the team that wins the Eastern Conference finals involving the Indiana Pacers and the New York Knicks for the NBA championship in Game 1 of the Finals. Also, since Shaquille O’Neal in 2000, the 26-year-old Canadian is on track to make history as the first scoring champion to win an NBA championship in the same season.
