The MVP race was only a two-horse race throughout this past regular season. It would be either Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic gunning for his fourth.
Last season, when Jokic won his third, many, including Shaquille O’Neal, believed SGA should have been awarded his first piece of individual silverware. Those supporters believed the Thunder star had done enough to snatch the award away from the Serbian.
This season, supporters were split. On one hand was Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who led his team to lead the league. Then there was the Joker, who finished the season with a triple-double. But some believed voter fatigue would factor in this season.
The problem fans had was that the NBA left it too late to announce the winner. It was as if they were waiting to see who came out on top in the second-round series between the two frontrunners. Then, former Nuggets head coach Michael Malone made it worse by claiming SGA deserved it more than his former superstar player.
The NBA finally announced via Inside the NBA that Gilgeous-Alexander was the 2024-25 regular season MVP. Many were happy for the Canadian, then there were some who believed Jokic was robbed after posting the best season ever for a big man.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander met the super max criteria (All-NBA in 2 out of 3 years) last offseason but was ineligible to sign because he was short of the years of service criteria.

He is eligible this offseason to sign a four-year $293M extension with OKC.
Because he won MVP (and…
Then, another news came in that with this win, the 26-year-old will be eligible to sign a 5-year, $380M extension next offseason. He could do a Jalen Brunson and sign a 4-year, $293M extension this offseason if he wants, but he has the option of becoming the first player to breach the $70 million/yr mark.
Fans feel Shai Gilgeous-Alexander does not deserve $380 million deal
Basketball fans might have been torn selecting their MVP winner. But when they learnt about the possibility of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander earning a $380 million contract, it ticked them off. Fans believe the CBA is rewarding players who have not attained anything for their team. Earning individual awards to gain generational wealth seemed undeserved.
Fans took to social media to vent their frustrations. They believe Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals is further proof that SGA does not represent the beautiful game of basketball. To have him as both MVP winner and the highest-paid player is not the way the NBA should be promoting. Check out examples of such reactions below.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is eligible to earn $76 million/yr if he signs that monster deal next offseason. He will be set for life, considering this deal will essentially pay him $1 million per game. If he signs that deal after the 2025-26 offseason, he will earn nearly $580 million by the time he is 33 years old.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gifts teammates Rolexes after winning MVP
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander knows how his Oklahoma City Thunder teammates have helped him to win his first MVP award. They have been harping about him winning the award right from the start of last season. To thank them for their support, the Canadian superstar decided to show his gratitude.

He took the entire team to a Rolex store in Oklahoma City and gave them freedom to select a watch of their choice. The team selected various models from the luxury watchmaker and then gathered around to show off their new gifts.

Even if it sets their leading superstar back by a considerable amount, it will be a gift worth every penny, considering how they have had his back all this while. Many have recognized how this Oklahoma City Thunder team is as united as any team could be. They will need to rely on that unity in Game 2 tomorrow.
