Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s OKC Declining White House Visit Stirs Social Media – “Their Fans Won’t Like This”

After Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his Oklahoma City Thunder won the 2025 NBA championship, many felt that the team might be building a dynasty.
Other than the reigning league MVP, the rest of the team was deep enough to fuel a championship run of their own, as such deep rosters are characteristic of recent dynasties.
The last dynasty, the Golden State Warriors, focused on its three primary stars and added players whom they felt were great complementary pieces.
Since they struggled against the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers, the Warriors had to add Kevin Durant. Other than that, their formula stayed true in their 2022 triumph, too.
Coming back to the Thunder, they have a team that can continue to fight for titles as long as their core of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, and Lu Dort stick together.
The quartet establishes both their offensive and defensive identity, and that is why, when healthy, they make for an explosive team that could obliterate everyone again this season to become NBA champions.
But before they can do that, the White House, as they do with all winners, wants the Thunder to celebrate their championship with President Donald Trump.
The Oklahoma City Thunder, the NBA’s reigning champion, will not make the customary visit to the White House while in Washington due to a “timing issue”, a team spokesperson told @TheAthletic.

However, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his teammates are unlikely to go, after the franchise informed the administration that they will not be able to do so due to a ‘timing issue,’ as their spokesperson confirmed with The Athletic.
Fans question Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and OKC’s motives
This reason has logic, as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is helping his Oklahoma City Thunder hold on to their top of the league standing. After injuries hampered their goal to break the single-season win-loss record, they do not want to take chances.
At this stage of the season, every game is important, and that is why the Denver Nuggets have also given a similar reason in the past, despite most of them being then-President Joe Biden‘s supporters. However, basketball fans feel that the franchise is ignoring its own fan base.
They feel that, being in a predominantly red state, the organization might invite the wrath of the very same fans that are cheering for them at Paycom Center. That makes this decision seem questionable at best. Check out examples of those reactions below.

This will definitely stir up headlines regardless of the reason

Thunder fans are probably split on how they feel about this
Probably not a good idea… pic.twitter.com/hbZapRs5ku

Reddest state in the union with the most ardent NBA fans in the league…and they have a "timing" issue? Not a good look.
— Frankie Sealy (@RakaRight) March 20, 2026
Wow. They are in one of the redest States in the Union. Know your local fan base.
— Lockpickworld (@Lockpickworld76) March 20, 2026
Wow! From red, red Oklahoma? What is happening?
— AgtheWag (@akholland68) March 21, 2026
Isn't Oklahoma the only state that is entirely red? So they are essentially representing themselves, not OKC
— Donald Hensley (@TheRealDonnie) March 20, 2026
Literally the reddest state in the union, roh roh

It is unclear whether political choices steered Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder to make this decision. They might argue that the timing does not suit them, but if they do incur the wrath of their own fans, it could be detrimental.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander believes the ‘hate’ proves he is doing something right
Even if their fans question their motives, the Oklahoma City Thunder can appease them if they continue to win championships, something the state has not experienced in a professional environment for a long time.

While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has elevated himself to become the de facto leader in this year’s MVP race, there are many who believe that he does not play ‘ethical’ basketball.
Everybody in the history of the NBA has an arc where everyone loves them, and then everyone hates them. LeBron James was hated, and look what he’s done for the game? It’s part of the game. I love it. It’s stuff I dreamed about as a kid.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander told SI’s Chris Mannix
While talking about his performances, the Canadian also specified that just as Lakers fans do not complain about Luka Doncic‘s incessant complaining or his free throws, so do his Oklahoma City Thunder fans.
Column: MVP? @shaiglalex says he wants to win it again. And by any barometer, the Thunder star has been better than last year https://t.co/eZaP0Q4TfM

The four-time NBA All-Star believes that his fans will support him as long as he continues to perform for them, and wins games and championships. That is probably the best way to keep them in line with what is important.
