Ex-New Zealand cricketer Shane Bond shared his concern for star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s recurring back injuries, as well as his fitness. The former Kiwi bowler exclaimed that another injury could possibly end Bumrah’s cricketing career.

Jasprit Bumrah remained out of the Indian cricket team, during their recent Champions Trophy campaign. The Men in Blue went on to win the 2025 edition of the tournament in Dubai, marking their third CT trophy in the history of the competition. Bumrah was out due to a back injury that he suffered during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, in the months of December and January.

The 31-year-old pacer, who is ranked number one in the world in Test cricket, walked off the pitch on the second day of India’s match against Australia, in January this year. Later on, reports emerged that Bumrah had to undergo scans for a stress-related injury. He is currently receiving treatment at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru, and is on his way to recovering from the injury.

Moreover, it is not the first time that Bumrah has remained sidelined for an extended spell. Back in March 2023, the Indian right-arm pacer underwent surgery for another back injury. He has been in and out of the treatment room, generating concern. Ex-New Zealand pacer Shane Bond recently spoke about the 31-year-old’s future and work management. Bond had trained Bumrah during his Mumbai Indians’ days.

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Shane Bond expressed the need to give the 31-year-old pacer a much needed break, amid the busy schedule. Bond also noted the difficulties Jasprit Bumrah has faced in transitioning from T20 to Test cricket. While claiming that another back injury for Bumrah could be career-ending, he stressed the importance of resting the player, ahead of the much-important 2027 Cricket World Cup.

I wouldn’t want to be playing him any more than two in a row… If he has another injury in the same spot, that could be a career-ender, potentially, because I’m not sure you can have surgery on that spot again.
