New York Mets star Juan Soto unexpectedly found his name trending on social media on Wednesday night due to popular comedian Shane Gillis. The host of the 2025 ESPYs made a wild joke regarding him, U.S. President Donald Trump, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, and UFC color commentator Joe Rogan.
Gillis has been known for making some wild comments and jokes. After getting fired from Saturday Night Live in 2019 for making some racist and offensive remarks, he has rebuilt his career through Netflix’s ‘Beautiful Dogs‘ and ‘Tires‘.
On Wednesday, he would serve as the host of the 2025 ESPYs awards. During his monologue, he would make several jokes regarding top athletes like Caitlin Clark and Shedeur Sanders. He would then go on to throw jabs at Joe Rogan and Donald Trump.
Joe Rogan wanted me to be here to host this award show so that I could capture Adam Silver because Joe thinks he’s an alien…Donald Trump wanted me to be here to capture Juan Soto for the same reason.

Gillis mentioned that Rogan wanted him to host this show so that he could capture Adam Silver because he thinks that the NBA Commissioner is an ‘alien‘, most likely taking a swipe at his appearance. He would then mention that Trump wanted him here too, so that he could capture ‘alien‘ Juan Soto.
For context, Soto is from the Dominican Republic. Despite playing in the United States since 2018, the Mets star is not a U.S. citizen. The ‘alien‘ in this was about him being a non-U.S. citizen, particularly illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has been focusing on the immigration of several non-U.S. citizens who crossed the border illegally.
Unlike the other comments Gillis made on Wednesday, the crowd would largely remain silent during this joke from him. There were some uncomfortable laughs, and someone from the audience would even boo him.
Juan Soto was snubbed from the 2025 All-Star Game
This past Tuesday, Truist Park hosted the 2025 All-Star Game between the American League and the National League. In a battle between the stars, Juan Soto was one of the biggest snubs from the game this year.

The Mets’ star was looking to create history this year by representing his 4th team for a 4th year running. He played as a Washington Nationals star in 2022 and then got traded to the San Diego Padres.
In 2023, he would represent the Padres in this game. Following his trade to the New York Yankees in December that year, he would represent the Bronx Bombers in this traditional game last year. Had he been selected, he would have represented the colors of the NY Mets.
Juan Soto did not make the NL All-Star team.

During the All-Star Game, his former teammate, Aaron Judge, was asked about him. The Yankees captain would claim that they “definitely miss” him and would wish him well.
We definitely miss him. Juan was not only a great player but a great person in our clubhouse, a great guy…I know the Mets are loving him over there. We enjoyed our time with him with the Yankees. I wish him nothing but the best.

Judge and Soto would form a formidable offensive duo for the Yankees last season. They combined to hit 99 home runs in the regular season and guided the team to its first World Series since 2009. However, they ended up losing in the Fall Classic against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Following the loss in the World Series, Soto would become a free agent. After weeks of speculation, Soto would choose the Mets over the Yankees in a massive $765 million deal and switch allegiances in New York.
After a slow start to life as a Mets star, Soto has found his form again. The 4-time MLB All-Star ended the 1st half of the season with 23 home runs and 56 RBI while batting at a .262 average through 96 games.
