Flavio Cobolli has gone from being a regular ATP player to truly consolidating his name among the elites. The Italian has proven in the second half of the season that he can compete for titles. He has been certified to reach the Top 30 after his victory against Stan Wawrinka on Monday (October 7). However, he will face his first major test against World No. 4 Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic is yet to win a tour-level title this season but has always remained competitive on the court. The Serbian is playing at the Rolex Shanghai Masters for the first time since 2019. He remains the record winner of the tournament, having won the title four times.

Flavio Cobolli’s major highlight of the first half of the year was reaching the semifinals of the Geneva Open. The Italian went on to lose to eventual champion Casper Ruud. However, it was during the North American hard-court swing that the 22-year-old talent was revealed. He reached the final of the ATP 500 Citi Open, after defeating No. 2 seed Ben Shelton.
He finished as runners-up after losing to Sebastian Korda in three sets. He reached the Round of 16 of the Cincinnati Open before losing to Hubert Hurkacz. At the China Open, he defeated Alexander Bublik and Pavel Kotov to earn a quarterfinal spot but exited the tournament after losing to Daniil Medvedev. At the Shanghai Masters, he came from behind to beat Stan Wawrinka 6-7(8), 7-6(4), 6-3 and earn a place in the third round.
On the other hand, Novak Djokovic has played in fewer tournaments this season than any other Top 10 player. The Serbian has failed to produce his last year’s form that saw him win three out of four Grand Slams. The 37-year-old reached his first final of the 2024 season at Wimbledon in July, but lost the title to Carlos Alcaraz.
However, he earned his revenge against the Spaniard at the Paris Olympics final, winning in a straight set to claim the gold medal. The World No. 4 failed to display the same level of performance at the US Open, as he exited in the third round. At the Shanghai Masters, he opened his campaign with a thrilling 7-6(3), 7-6(9) victory over American Alex Michelsen.

This is the first meeting between Flavio Cobolli and Novak Djokovic. Djokovic has made the Shanghai Masters a fortress having won 35 matches in the tournament and lost only five times. Last year, Cobolli didn’t feature in Shanghai, opting to play in the ATP Challengers. The Italian will hope to continue with his form when he faces Djokovic. However, Djokovic is favorite to earn a victory against the World No. 30 because of his vast experience.
