Mac McClung didn’t just win the Slam Dunk Contest; he obliterated it. Cementing his place in the NBA’s history, McClung became the first player ever to win three consecutive Slam Dunk Contests. And as Shannon Sharpe went on to praise the young star, he didn’t mince his words while declaring him a “Mt. Rushmore Dunker.”

The G League guard’s electrifying performance at the 2025 All-Star Saturday night in San Francisco has astounded the entire sports industry, including many prominent names in the NFL. McClung competed head-to-head with San Antonio Spurs’ Stephon Castle. Still, after scoring 50 maximum points in all four attempts, he demonstrated his contention as the best dunker in the contest.

Sharpe, who is an embodiment of greatest, offered high praise to the 26-year-old dunker by sharing a social media post, underscoring the impact McClung has had on the contest, which some say had been losing its luster in recent years.

Fellow ESPN analyst Ryan Clark also showered words of appreciation on the G League guard’s historic three-peat, calling him the “best dunker of all time.” Even though McClung hasn’t played more than five NBA games, he built quite the name for himself by competing in Dunk Contests. Fans have even considered him as the sole reason to enjoy the contests for the past three years.

Ja Morant inspired by Mac McClung’s Dunk Contest win

Besides the praise from the NFL former stars-turned-analysts, McClung’s spectacular performance also caught the attention of the Memphis Grizzlies’ Ja Morant. Despite not competing in a single dunk contest, Morant is widely considered among the best dunkers in the world of basketball.

Mac [McClung] make me decide to dunk,” wrote Morant on his official X handle, reflecting his interest in competing in the dunk contest after being inspired by him.

Given the fading interest in dunk contests observed in recent times, Morant’s appearance can significantly revert things or may influence it to the peak of popularity among basketball fans. But if he attends the contest, he won’t do it alone as he tagged Zach Lavine and Aaron Gordon in his X post— two of the best dunk performances ever from the 2016 edition.
